Did you get worse after starting seizure medicine?

Tue, 08/08/2006 - 19:11
My 8 y.o. daughter was recently diagnosed with epilepsy. She started on medicine 1 1/2 weeks ago. However, her frequency of seizures has greatly increased. Has anyone else experienced this? Lori Mom of 8 y.o.

I haven't personally seen it, but I've heard of it. My son hasn't started meds yet--he was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago. What med is she on? Have you told your dr? Maybe they should repeat the EEG, or get video EEG. My heart goes out to you, as I know what I'm going through myself.

She has been put on Keppra. She is on a low dose now. I have been notifying the dr. every time she has a seizure, so that they track the frequency. When I asked them, they said to expect seizures for 2-3 weeks, until it is built up in the blood stream. However, it is getting worse. She also was diagnosed just 2 weeks ago. We started school on Monday, and all of this has been very overwhelming. She had an EEG at that time, and had 2 seizures during it. One after the hyperventilation test, and one during the strobe light. She is scheduled for an MRI in two weeks, and the wait is killing me. She had a seizure yesturday at school. We were hoping that we would not have to tell the kids in her class, but now we need to. We plan to go in tomorrow. I found a great book on Amazon, TAKING SEIZURE DISORDERS TO SCHOOL. It discuss things very well for elementary age. Lori

I am not a parent with a child who have E. I have E and I am 28 years old. I know how you feel when you say about the school issue. You must know that is very difficult for someone, having a seizure among other people. You must pay attention on that. After my first seizure it took many weeks to go somewhere out. I take trileptal. My doctor told me about Keppra. It is a relatively new medicine. But as I know, Keppra is for complementary medicine. And a second advice. Don't stay only to one doctor. Take and a second opinion. I always do that. I have visited four doctors and I have heard three different stories! I hope the best for you and your family... Andreas
