Speaking just before a seizure?

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 19:59

Alrighty, I have a question for anyone that cares to read this. XD

Has anyone tried to talk right before a seizure? Like call out or anything?

Because before my first seizure, I remember waving my hand in front of my face and not seeing them (which totally tripped me out; I eventually figured out my eyes must have kept the last image they saw imprinted on my retinas. Which is kinda cool in a strange way.) and I called out to my friend, or I THOUGHT I did. Haven't had a chance to ask her if she heard or not, though.

My second one was when I was in the basement of my house, and I THOUGHT I screeched for my dad, but apparently some sort of strange mumble came out, but thank God he heard anyway. I could have sworn I yelled.

So, that means my linguistic/vocal centre shut down, right? Has anyone else tried to alert people they were going to have a seizure? Because I need to know if I can manage to get someone's attention before I seize.

By the way, I have grand mal/tonic clonic seizures and my aura lasts about 10 seconds. Starts with heaviness in the limbs, then the sight goes, then I am down and out. Recovery takes about two hours.

 Thanks in advance!

From childhood, my partial complex seizures were misdiagnosed as anxiety attacks due to the sense of intense fear and deja vu.  Almost every time I had one of these "anxiety attacks", I would announce it's arrival!  I would feel my heart start to race, and just before deja vu would set in, I'd announce "I'm having a panic attack!"  Often this would be followed by me walking off across the room or wherever.  When I finally got diagnosed at age 27 with complex partial seizures, "I'm having a panic attack" became "oh S**t" or something along those lines.  My neurologist said that's a textbook symptom.

Wow! I am really new to this, but this sounds exactly  like what I have done nearly my entire life.  It's quite incredible how seizures can go misdiagnosed as anxiety attacks for over a decade.  I don't mean to sound harsh or mean, but I am steering clear of anyone in the psychology profession for a while.  I was never even told I should see a neurologist or anyone else as a possibility for these 'uncurable' "panic attacks"...  I just thought I had really bad panic attacks my entire life and the medicine they gave me did nothing but make me worse.  This has been happening since I was a young girl and I just turned 26.  I got my first bottle of anti-convulsants a week ago.  Standing in line too long.

Whenever I have one, before I fall on the ground, I wail. It's the only thing that comes out! So I'll wail, "mom," and they know it's a seizure. Also, I have said things before I go unconscious, but my family tells me they don't hear it. The first time i had one, apparently I woke up after thirty minutes and screamed at the sight of my sister. I don't remember that at all. Usually, I'll know. Everything in sight either starts shaking, or I get this buzzing noise in my ears. I think they're auras.
