Speaking just before a seizure?

Mon, 07/05/2010 - 19:59

Alrighty, I have a question for anyone that cares to read this. XD

Has anyone tried to talk right before a seizure? Like call out or anything?

Because before my first seizure, I remember waving my hand in front of my face and not seeing them (which totally tripped me out; I eventually figured out my eyes must have kept the last image they saw imprinted on my retinas. Which is kinda cool in a strange way.) and I called out to my friend, or I THOUGHT I did. Haven't had a chance to ask her if she heard or not, though.

My second one was when I was in the basement of my house, and I THOUGHT I screeched for my dad, but apparently some sort of strange mumble came out, but thank God he heard anyway. I could have sworn I yelled.

So, that means my linguistic/vocal centre shut down, right? Has anyone else tried to alert people they were going to have a seizure? Because I need to know if I can manage to get someone's attention before I seize.

By the way, I have grand mal/tonic clonic seizures and my aura lasts about 10 seconds. Starts with heaviness in the limbs, then the sight goes, then I am down and out. Recovery takes about two hours.

 Thanks in advance!

Interesting... I thought I was the only one that did this!  When I realize my partials are turning into a grand mal I can't coherently speak, I've tried but it just comes out as mumbled weird sounds.  I have finally figured out that if I need to alert my husband or whoever I'm with that one is coming I don't try to use words anymore, people that are close to me and know about the seizures know my signal is that I look at them and grab their arm and one is on the way.  Also, if I'm in another room and need my husband to come in because one is one the way I just let the sounds come out as loud as I can to get his attention, it works pretty good!

At few years ago when I realized this happens when a seizure would come, if I had someone in the room with with I would intentionally try to talk and when it was over would ask tham what I said and was always told it was just jumbled sounds.  Also, I don't know exactly what kind of epilepsy you have but mine is in my left temporal lobe.  I also just found out last year when I tried to have the surgery that the focus of my seizures is imbedded in the language center of my brain, so I wonder if that has something to do with it???

There was an article about warning or aura before a seizure and this is interesting you mention this.  This brings tingles to me.  I want to speak to people and I can hear them but my words become jarbled. Sometimes the EEG doesn't record anything and other times it did. I want to say something to my husband or my family and they hear something but they realize I have jarbled speech and I drool.

I lay down and rest and let my body rest  until I feel confident I know where I am again.  I sometimes have trouble after a seizure speaking too.  This subsides.  Thank you for your question.

Interesting! This is the same experience I feel sometimes. My family says I try  to speak but make no sense. This is probably because the seiuzre is happening in the language part of my brain.

If I'm writing and have a seizure I just scribble. This doesn't happen often. But I've noticed it.

Today I've been trying to rest but i'ts hard to keep my body still. I keep thinking of things to do, get up. It's frustrating.

If I have an aura and can use the magnet w the vns it seems to help. it doesn't always work out this way.
