Is My Epilepsy Going Away?

Wed, 01/24/2007 - 14:56
Hi my name is Taylor and I am 19, I have been with Epilepsy since I was 14 or 15 I can’t remember J. I was wondering if there are any statistics on the possibility of out-growing epilepsy. And if I was out growing epilepsy how can I tell? Epilepsy has left me bitter and cold or so I’ve been told, and the older I get. I have become less and less optimistic about life it self. So the very thought about growing out of epilepsy is an interesting prospect.

Hi Taylor, First know I am no physician.. let alone an epileptologist (a neurologist that focuses on E) I'm just a friend that has had E for many decades. The best I can do, regarding medical advice, is to give you a page written by a specialist on Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy. http://www.epilepsy.com/epilepsy/epilepsy_juvenilemyoclonic.html As a child I was told I had chances of outgrowing E. Suffice it to say I didn't. I'd suggest you see an epileptologist and have current tests done. As the JME link says 80% of people with JME are controlled via taking daily meds, your chances are good. :) This in an age where there is far greater understanding of epilepsy, tests, and meds, than when I was your age, so chances are better you'll get controlled sooner than I did. I wish you luck and always know that even if not controlled it does NOT effect who you are. Sadly, E often has an emotional side which is rarely discussed. http://www.neuropsychiatryreviews.com/dec00/npr_dec00_epilepsy.html Bottom line, live every day to the fullest and always be thankful for what you do have. If you become controilled great, but if not you need to realize that E isn't you, seizures aren't your fault, and that many eligible people do not drive anyway. best wishes ~sol
