Alcohol and seizures

Tue, 11/28/2006 - 22:22
I'm sure there have been many discussions on here about this, but I'm new. I need some help. I'm not epileptic, my seizures are caused from scar tissue in my brain. Result of a bad fall in my cheerleading days. I had my first seizure about 3 years ago and then one 2 years ago. My dr. said I have seizure activity on my brain and put me on Trileptal. I'm in college and love going out with my friends for a few drinks. I was wondering what everyone's take on drinking and E meds. are. I recently had a baby and want to go out, but I'm not sure about drinking. What could possibly happen? I don't want to binge drink or anything, just a few maybe. It doesn't seem possible that everyone with E or seizures doesn't drink! Help me!!! Thanks for listening. Anna

Hi Anna,

I think everybody has got it right (for the most part), in my opinion.  You have to know yourself and appreciate your health.  Drinking will effect your body if you take a small amount or not.  Thats just what it is made to do.  Be smart about this decision.  You have seizures and you are asking if alcohol would affect your meds or your brain?  I think you already know the answer to this question, Anna.  The question is do you want to ignore the correct answer or not.

First of all, talk to your doc.  I used to see a doc  - he was the director of the epilepsy clinic at Barrows Neuro Center in Phoenix (one of the best in this country) & asked him the alcohol question.  He said social drinking is fine but of course don't go overboard.  I drink now and then & haven't had any problems since the seizures started in '91.  Best of luck to you.

I have to agree that alcohol causes seizures from the hangover.

I actually use alcohol in a pinch to stop a seizure.  I have auras. So i f i start feeling like a seizure, ill have a couple of drinks and then my head feels like I am somebody without epilepsy.

Based on how i know my body, I cant have a seizure if im buzzed.

I am not advocating alcoholism. Its just that I have been on so many different meds that dont work. Alcohol is so simple and cheap compared to prescription drugs. Not to mention some of the drugs i was taking will screw your liver up as well.

I want everyone to keep in mind that I see alcohol as a medication that should be taken responsibly.
