Alcohol and seizures

Tue, 11/28/2006 - 22:22
I'm sure there have been many discussions on here about this, but I'm new. I need some help. I'm not epileptic, my seizures are caused from scar tissue in my brain. Result of a bad fall in my cheerleading days. I had my first seizure about 3 years ago and then one 2 years ago. My dr. said I have seizure activity on my brain and put me on Trileptal. I'm in college and love going out with my friends for a few drinks. I was wondering what everyone's take on drinking and E meds. are. I recently had a baby and want to go out, but I'm not sure about drinking. What could possibly happen? I don't want to binge drink or anything, just a few maybe. It doesn't seem possible that everyone with E or seizures doesn't drink! Help me!!! Thanks for listening. Anna

I was born with seizures and have generalized seizures throughout my brain.

I am neither binger nor am I an abstainer.  I do drink.  Not often but I do.  On the times that I have I have not had a Seizure.

Doctors and politicians like to throw around the words "increased likelyhood" "Or increased percentage" of an attack and in this case a seizure.  they will throw out a number like 10% but 10% doesn't mean you have a 10% chance of having an attack.  it means you have an increase likely hood of 10% from the original number which say was 5% every day(very high for seizures but the math is easier to follow)  which means you have a 5.5% likelyhood of having an attack based upon the effects of whatever you are doing.  Thus 10% of 5% is 1/2 of a percent.

now I don't know how much alcohol increases the likelyhood of having a seizure but I can gaurantee that when you go to sleep your not going to have a seizure automatically because you drank.   The likelyhood is increased yes.  But does that mean we can't go out and experience life a few times?  Have fun?

I'm not going to sit on the sidelines and let this disease control my life.  But I'm also not going to be completely stupid.  drink 300 times one of those times you will have a seizure and alcohol will be the factor.

I believe the words "drink in moderation" come to mind.  But go out, have fun, let a few friends know what you have, and if something happens make sure they know what to do.

I'm not a doctor but I do have the disease and that is what I'm going to do.

im 20(going onto 21) and i take epilim. i do drink alcohol but i remeber when i first started taking the medicationi was pretty scrade of doing it. basically i think it will depend on each person and what their threshold is. best time to try having a small drink is at home with a partner or a friend so your in a safe enviroment to try out if your thinking about it. As you don't really want to be testing the waters when you actually go out as it could be a very difficult situation with public.

hope that helps x
