Temporal lobe surgery

Tue, 07/28/2009 - 03:05

Hello to everyone who lives with and loves a person with uncontrolled epilepsy.

My beautiful 9 year old daughter is due to have surgery on the 29th of Sept 2009. Whilst we are excitied about the prospect of, 70% chance of becoming seizure free - we are concerned about the issue of stroke associated with the surgery.

Has anyone experienced negative effects of the surgery?

Concerned mother. Regards, Anne-Marie

Diagnosed with Complex partials in'74 when 17.Never been controlled, tried over 25 meds.Had an unsuccessful L. temporal lobectomy in '96.Now on KeppraXR 1500mg once daily (at bedtime)&Vimpat 350mg.twice daily. The longest time between seizures is 3mos.&5days,that is only of seizure which I knew of,I might have had others w/o awareness of them.Since I live alone w/o a witness to tell me of one occuring. Now I hope another operation will be better than before.I wonder if when a doctor calls a past doctor for records,if they talk to each other and will the second one prevent from doing better then the first inorder to keep you from fileing suit against the first, because it looks as if#2 couldn't do any better than#1 did.Or should I just not direct a new doctor to any past doctor and tell him to start from that day on.Many hospitals and NIH.

Hello!

My 11 year old son  is 7 weeks post surgery (parietal lobe), following  4 years of uncontrolled simple/complex partial seizures.

I was petrified pre-surgery, but we are so glad we chose this option.  Recovery time has been slower than we anticipated, and we have still been seeing a few breakthroughs which we are hoping are just surgery related.

Regardless, the change in our son has been incredible. From my experience so far, if your daughter is a candidate for surgery, I would recommend going ahead with it.

Please email me and I'd be happy to go into more details with you.

Hi My surgery was performed back in 1994 @UVA Medical Center Where I Was Taking 4 medicines from tegretol depakote, serax, klonipin. After this surgery I went 15 years without a seizure and did my part of saving other peoples lives as a firefighter. Auras are the most problems now and this has made me go back to taking 2 pills a day instead of before surgey it was 21 pills.
