to treat or not to treat

Our boy (5 years old), was diagnosed with Epilepsy at 2.5yrs after tonic-clonic febrile seizures and a drop seizure when sick. EEGs show absence seizures, which can also be elicited by hyperventilation. We've observed some absence seizures ourselves, but not very often. My 7 yr old claims that she observes him having an absence seizure about once a week. We've started recording that, and it's more like once or twice a month. Against the advice of our neurlogist we've decided to NOT start him on AED meds. Mostly because of a fear of side effects. We thought that we would start treating him when he starts school. In the mean time we would take precautions to protect him against injuries due to seizures. Now here we are 3 yrs. later. His seizures seem rare and mild (or are we missing them??). He has had several fevers without seizures. And he is doing great academically. He is only in Kindergarten, but is reading at at least 1st grade, if not 2nd grade level. So, are we wrong in still holding off medication? Anyone else doing this? Any opinons, experiences, advice?? mkz

Hello ericmom, every child is different some may grow out of them some dont. what was the med(s) that your neuro wanted to put eric on and at what dosage? if it's a very low dosage it just may help with the absence seizures. my daughter (14) just had the VNS installed. she was always a A/B honor student then this yr in 9th grade her grades went into the gutter. now since the vns, she is getting better. she's getting 93's on test, so and so on. what im trying to get at is why would you not put him on the meds? the neuro is a splst not just a regualr MD. to me it would be better to try and control this while he's young and maybe just maybe he may grow out of them. if you chose not to place him on meds i would have to say watch his schooling. IF it starts to go down hill (like read a book at night with him and if he's having trouble with the reading then he is have absence seizures) then rethink about the meds. just my .02 worth. scott

I can completely understand why you would want to wait to put your child on medication. There are a lot of side effects to the medication and if he is only having one to two a month I am not sure I would put him on the medication either if he was my son. It took us awhile to decide if we wanted to put our daughter on the medication (and she is having a lot more). Sorry I can't give you a definitely yes or no. I would keep having testing done because he could be having more than you realize and keep in contact with his doctor. Good luck. God Bless, Epimom
