Absence Seizures

Fri, 01/23/2015 - 15:28

Hi, my 6 year old daughter was diagnosed 13 months ago with absence seizues.  We've tried Keppra, Lamictal, Zonegran, Onfi, and are now on Depakote.  So far nothing seems to be working for her.  When she was first diagnosed we were told this is a very easy form of epilepsy to treat.  Has anyone else struggled with treatment for absence seizures?

YES! My daughter was diagnosed with absence seizures when she was almost 4yrs old, she's now 7yrs and we are still struggling with finding the right medication for her and she is still not seizure free.  It's been really hard at times dealing with the behavioral side effects.  We've tried Zarotin, Depakote, Lamictal, and currently Lamictal and Zonegran.  I think our daughter is super sensitive to these drugs because they have all caused us such grief with mood / behavioral problems, and been such a disappointment. She is currently on Lamictal 150mg a.m. / 100mg p.m, and Zonegran 150mg p.m.  Our plan was to try the Zonegran and then start to wean off the Lamictal. The Lamictal at the higher dose caused depression, so we lowered her dose and introduced Zonegran.  Since increasing the Zonegran, our daughter has been wetting herself daily and is indifferent about most things.  She doesn't even care to change her wet panties.  She is easily agitated and is tired ALL the time.  We have an EEG on Monday and we'll see what the doctor says.  She is still having seizures, just don't really know how many.  Gosh, we've had so many problems with these darn medications, it's been such a challenge.  Our daughter is an only child, we homeschool, we're a very close religious family and our daughter is normally so well behaved and polite, but these drugs turn her into someone else.
