Abnormal EEG, no seizures

Thu, 06/22/2017 - 13:29
My son had an eEG a few weeks ago, dr said the eeg is abnormal but no seizures. He had several sharp spike and wave episodes generalized. Mainly in his sleep. I understand these are not actual seizures. She did put him on medication. I guess I'm just confused on what to tell other drs, schools etc. anyone have a similar experience?

they saw epileptiform

they saw epileptiform discharges, they are strongly correlated with epilepsy. so while epilepsy is likely, it's not certain. there are epilepsies where seizures mainly or only happen during sleep, just after waking, etc...are you comfortable with asking this doc questions? because the questions you have in the original post are a good start, they also lead to getting her to clearly communicate if there's a new diagnosis and such. what did she say that convinced you the meds were a good idea? have you started meds? have you noted any good changes on meds? (my husband was not convinced about epilepsy but I was given our situation and having read a lot. normally he's against tylenol so when I asked if he was prepared to take our kid off meds, that was not something he would choose as things were so so much better - drug at the time only treated seizures).
