4 yr old. So called Absence Seizure. Looking for some support.

The first time he had, he stopped responding. Went to couch and just slept for an hour to 2. Happened about 4 times on same day and finally had a vomiting. Took him to ER and had one more. They said it could be absence seizures. Has been on keppra and also on melatonin for while. Had another one after 2 months during hair cut. Same pre symptoms, no response, blank stare and head fell back, with blood vessels in eyes really red. Lasted about 7 - 9 minutes. Took him to ER. Looking to see if anyone had the same kind of seizures in the same age group.

Thanks a lot for your input Just_joe, mereloaded and Amy Joe. I really appreciate your time. We have been visting a pediatric neurologist. The neurologist asked us to continue Keppra and asked us to use melatonin as well because our son doesnt sleep very long amd trying to put him to sleep upto 11.5 hour per day. We are trying everything. Once again. We really apprecaite your time.

for most people melatonin

for most people melatonin helps them get to sleep but does not help them maintain sleep. there is some form of extended release melatonin if one can take a whole pill. it is not unusual for epilepsy patients to have different sleep cycles, my kid sure has that problem and she wakes up every night, has been a problem for over three years now. the epileptologist explained what he saw of her sleep cycles during a multi day EEG. some people find magnesium helps sleep (or a magnesium calcium combo). magnesium has some support in research for helping sleep but no research in kids that I know of. I give it to another child of ours who was having trouble with sleep, it helped. now that child has been dx with visual migraines so we still give it. there's research showing it can help some people with migraines. some parents have noted reduced seizures when supplementing with magnesium but not sure there's support for that in research, and epilepsy is not some easy/monolithic area so something that helps some does not necessarily help many.

Thanks a lot Amy Joe. We will
