10 year old son with possible seizures

Sat, 10/14/2006 - 20:11
Hi, I am so happy to find this board!! I am very confused about my son. A few weeks ago he started seeing spots coming at him as he describes it,he then falls down when they completely cover his vision. He also has many more episodes of seeing double for just a split second. Both of these episodes last only a few seconds, or less except for the headache that sometimes follows the spots which can last about 2 minutes. We went to the neurologist and he had the MRI done, thank God that came back clear. My son had an EEG a few days ago, which showed some abnormalities, but not enough to say he is definitely having seizures. Now the neuro wants my son to have a 23 hr EEG. Can anyone explain to me what exactly happens during a 23 hr EEG? Can any of you relate to these spells my child is having? The dr says his spells really don't fall into any particular seizure category. Also does anyone know if there is a correlation between high IQ and seizures? Any help/advice would be appreciated:)Thanks!

That's what my doctor said, they just couldn't get an accuarte reading with the first EEG,especially since my son did not dose off at anytime during the EEG. He is suppsoed to have the 23 hr EEG at the childrens hospital,I hope it's not too boring. Should I bring books and other activities for him to do?

My daughter had not your typical seizures. They are called partial seizures and she was also going down on the floor for only a few minutes. She complained her head was hurting. All her tests came back normal but from the description that was given to the pediatric neurologist, she diagnosed seizures. Partial seizures are tricky because they follow no particular course of symptoms. Each one can be different. My daughter had one in school where all of a sudden the picture in front of her started to move in slow motion. Make sure you have a good neurologist. We have tried different medications and now the seizures seem controlled. Good luck.

Hi. My wife gets the same symptoms at the beginning of her migranes. I would definately take your neurologist up on the 23hr EEG. The other EEG's are hit and miss. We're currently going through hell to get a proper diagnosis for our son. The same neurologist first said he had complex partial seizures and has been treating him with meds for 5 years. Numerous EEG's along the way that apparently confirmed it. Now after one clear EEG the doctor's decided that our son "NEVER HAD EPILEPSY"???!!! He refuses to to anymore testing and recommended he discontinues his meds without any further followups. Won't even consider a 24hr EEG or any other investigations. He told us to go get a second opinion if we didn't like his. Just bizarre. Our son is still having the same symptoms as they never did clear up 100%. So bottom line if you have a doctor who's actually willing to do further studies..TAKE HIM UP ON IT!! It's nice to see you have one that probably cares.....hang on to him.
