Had First Seizure The End OF October 06

Wed, 12/06/2006 - 08:25
Hi All! I am a 51 yr. old woman and had my first seizure here at my home the 3rd week of October. My husband took me to the ER and they did an EEG...nothing showed up at first, but they did observe my first seizures. I just blanked out for a about a minute or so and could not communicate, nor did I hear if anyone was trying to communicate with me. They admitted me and their protocal is to get you on video for a day or so, along with EEG's. Mine progressed into grand mal seizures. After 5 days, I was sent home on Dilantin, 200 mg. twice a day. I still feel very frightened. I called the doctor and told him that I still always felt like one was right on the cusp of coming....his answer..."call me if you have another one". I was not happy with that remark at all. My GP gave me some Xanax and thank God, even though I know its dangerous to take, it does get rid of that constant feeling that one is one the way. My doctor said that seizures in midlife can be brought on my anxiety and stress. I do have plenty of anxiety and stres in my life. All I know is that I never want to have another seizure as long as I live. They are the most frightening things that I have ever been through. Pam:)

Pam... I have warnings before mine but a bit different. I see spots (almost like after a picture is taken, but a lot more of them) and I feel "funny", then my left hand starts to twitch, followed by both arms. Then I evidently pass out because the next thing I know I'm completely tired and my fiance tells me it's over. I like that I have some form of warning because it gives me about 2-3 minutes to get somewhere safe. I haven't had any since my first week with a lot of them, so hopefuly I wont have anymore, or they will all have "warnings".

I just joined this site and I just had to reply to your posting. I am in a simular situation. I had my first seizure in July of 2006 of which I had multiple seizures on Mon and Tues, 2 on Thurs, and 1 on Fri of which I was then released on Saturday. I had so many seizures Monday & Tuesday that I don't even remember one thing from either of those days. Anyway, I went home on Dilantin as well and I absolutely hated it! It would get tremors that were almost more like sudden twitches, not to mention the mood swings, depression, etc (although that may have been from the shock of what had happened). I had an appointment w/ my doctor and while there I mentioned this to him and he switched me to another medicine. I am now on Keppra and have absolutely no side effects from it, which is obviously great! I did not like Dilantin at all!!! I would definitely talk with your doctor and consider switching meds until you find something that works best for you. Good luck and keep me posted.
