goose bumps & 'hidden' seizures?

Tue, 01/10/2006 - 00:07
Hi, this is Maddie, I'm really glad to find this site. I still don't know for sure whether i have some kind of epilepsy. Neurology hasn't been much help, but my own dr believes i do because of a long history of strange episodes and LTL abnormality on eeg. But if so i don't understand exactly what form the seizures are taking, since those general episodes that i get can go on for a couple of days (seems too long for a single seizure, surely?). Also I don't have the main things that are often mentioned with left TLE, like bad smell, deja vu, staring, chewing, etc. (at least as far as I know). But over about 8 years I've steadily developed so many problems with mental speed, executive functions and any kind of abstract thinking, and i just can't understand how this much damage could be done by epilepsy - if that's what it is - wihtout seizures making themselves more obvious. Is there any such thing as sub-clinical seizures, or seizure-like activity, that can go on without classic seizure signs? Also, can goose-bumps be part of a seizure? Mine can be on leg, or head, or arm, or sometimes head & arm together, but only ever on one side at a time, never left & right together. The feeling can cover half or most of my leg or arm, but when I look at it the visible goose-bumps are spread out in a strange random pattern - say a blob here, a little curving strip there, and another patch further down. For a while they keep coming with a sort of 'pumping' feeling, like pulsing every few seconds. Also there's a 'soft' version of the same thing, that just makes a patch of skin feel a bit sticky. On days when I get all this it can be basically continuous, several times every hour. Can goose-bumps be an aura? Is an aura basically a simple partial seizure?

OH MY GOODNESS... I'm new and I was so relieved to have found this site!!!  If only for the simple fact that I am not going crazy and others experience this too.  I was almost in tears!  I could completely relate to what a lot of you were saying! (sigh of relief).  Although I have to say, I never experienced that "sticky" feeling.   I have some other issues (symptoms) that I went to a neurologist for.  Started out with one who ended up doing an EMG (anyone familiar with that? - not fun!).  All she found for the numbness and tingling was some slight carpal tunnel in my right hand between my wrist and padded part below my palm (we didn't check the other 3 limbs because I didn't particularily enjoy being stuck with needles and being zapped with electrical currents).  I ended up going for outpatient OT.  That has helped a bit with the numbness and tingling.  Then as a recommendation,  I went to another neurologist - checking for MS - this doctor specializes in this field.  He did his "normal" examination and concluded, "No, it's not MS".  I had a small sense of relief but still a bit of skepticism since people are misdiagnosed every day! He prescribed an RX (Lyrica) for pain merely because I was experiencing pain in my limbs and had diffculty sleeping...addressing a symptom and not proceeding to find the underlying problem.  I didn't take the RX after reading more on it.  So then I pressed on being that my oldest son (now 20) was diagnosed with partial seizures as a child (around age 10), I couldn't help but "wonder" about the possibility of myself, with some of the symptoms I was experiencing.  It's odd how many "disorders" can have very similar symptoms.  So anyway....I had my first (short) outpatient EEG...showed only a mild abnormality - which oddly can be "normal" for some people (it's like a "range" in levels). The doctor didn't seem "concerned", but I was.  I pushed to get more extensive testing. A 72-hour outpatient EEG test was ordered.  When the interpreting doctor FINALLY got around to reading the test (2 1/2 months later!), the results were, you guessed it - "nothing abnormal".  Again, a small sense of relief but still a bit of skepticism since I know something isn't "quite right".  I haven't had the "patches" of goosebumps for sometime now.  It's hard to tell but there is no (apparent) rhyme or reason for when they appear.  Sometimes when stressed, I get this feeling of chills (but I am not cold most of the time) and my head feels like it is shivering/shaking.  Funny though, that's not when the goosebumps appear.  So all of this combined with anxiety/panic attacks makes for an interesting life from day-to-day!  As many who knew me before all of this started (Sept '07), I was (and still am to a certain extent) a very outgoing individual but the anxiety has put a damper on that on many occasions (very frustrating for my personality "type").   I am not an advocate of trying just any meds either - I research them first.  However, I generally lean toward the natural/holistic arena (not the weird freaky new-age stuff) but like food-grade supplements, "diet", some exercise, etc.  I am not against medicine altogether (I pop Tylenol or allergy meds as needed), but have found that with natural supplements (usually no side effects) and watching food ingredient (possible food allergies)"diet", the need for over-the-counter meds (with side effects) has decreased, if not disappeared.  If someone takes an anti-anxiety pill on a non-regular basis, it could be okay.  But when used on a regular basis they are highly addictive and people have been known to have rebound anxiety!  But, I am fully against any anti-depressants (which are handed out like candy) due to the side effects and the horrific stories I have heard from NUMEROUS people!!!  But don't just take my word for it - do the research yourself (I included this because someone mentioned anti-depressants).  One thing I will share about anti-depressants... ALL of the shooters in the school-related shootings over the last decade were on, yep... anti-depressants! ALL OF THEM WERE!  Okay...enough about that but please, do the research yourself before just taking any medication - I'm sincere, serious and I care about people!     So anyway...What I am getting at is with all this medical knowledge doctors are suppose to have and all the new medical discoveries and technology, unfortunately you still have to be your own advocate (as with our topic - goose bumps & 'hidden' seizures)  ...Research! ...Research! ...Research!  Thank you everyone for your stories and info links!!!
