goose bumps & 'hidden' seizures?

Tue, 01/10/2006 - 00:07
Hi, this is Maddie, I'm really glad to find this site. I still don't know for sure whether i have some kind of epilepsy. Neurology hasn't been much help, but my own dr believes i do because of a long history of strange episodes and LTL abnormality on eeg. But if so i don't understand exactly what form the seizures are taking, since those general episodes that i get can go on for a couple of days (seems too long for a single seizure, surely?). Also I don't have the main things that are often mentioned with left TLE, like bad smell, deja vu, staring, chewing, etc. (at least as far as I know). But over about 8 years I've steadily developed so many problems with mental speed, executive functions and any kind of abstract thinking, and i just can't understand how this much damage could be done by epilepsy - if that's what it is - wihtout seizures making themselves more obvious. Is there any such thing as sub-clinical seizures, or seizure-like activity, that can go on without classic seizure signs? Also, can goose-bumps be part of a seizure? Mine can be on leg, or head, or arm, or sometimes head & arm together, but only ever on one side at a time, never left & right together. The feeling can cover half or most of my leg or arm, but when I look at it the visible goose-bumps are spread out in a strange random pattern - say a blob here, a little curving strip there, and another patch further down. For a while they keep coming with a sort of 'pumping' feeling, like pulsing every few seconds. Also there's a 'soft' version of the same thing, that just makes a patch of skin feel a bit sticky. On days when I get all this it can be basically continuous, several times every hour. Can goose-bumps be an aura? Is an aura basically a simple partial seizure?

Maddie, I just found this website and you are the first person that has described the same symptoms that I am having with the goosebumps. I have seen a doctor and I am currently take anticonvulsants but when I have told different doctors about the goosebumps they tell me that they have never heard of this and no one takes me seriously. I just want to know what is causing this. I am glad to know that I am not alone. Thanks for your post. Heather

Hey everyone, I actually had other symptoms that I ignored for YEARS AND YEARS AND YEARS (yes I am young but I have ignored them for about 6 years OR MORE) figured I was just odd, or maybe I was a hypochondriac cause after I got into a car accident it seemed I WAS ALWAYS getting sick so I figured I was crazy. With that said, I was having this TERRRRRRIBLE smell like burning plastic that can be just annoying or consume me and make me laid out for the rest of the day... that was it at first (of what I actually thought was weird) then this last year it started getting rediculously weird where I would get a taste in my mouth, my eyes twitch randomly but frequently. I have had some anxiety problems and then my mouth started feeling almost larger then it should be... or shaped differently... hard to explain. Well I have a friend who has narcolepsy so he sees a nuerologist and because hes my best friend I tell him all about it. He mentioned all this to his neurologist and she told me to see a neurologist ASAP!!!! So I went in... had the consultation. He continued to question me and then after a long chat he said "Are you SURE there is nothing else weird going on" so I mentioned that I get weird goosebumps on my arms but I wasnt sure if that was in anyway related and maybe everyone gets them. It hit him right there... he was like "That is NOT normal, you have epilepsy. We need to actually diagnose it, but I don't see what else could cause that"

So with that said... if something is weird, don't ignore it.  The goosebumps (if I hadn't ignored them) would have been the first symptom I ever experienced. I deduced I was just odd and my body hates me.... NO your body has no vendetta against you... get yourself checked out!
