WAITING FOR DIAGNOSES MEDICATION??

Fri, 06/10/2005 - 15:40
My daughter is 8 and just finished her VEEG on Wed. I am not sure as to whether or not she should take meds if she is diagnosed with epilespy. I have heard so many bad things about medications that I am reluctant to try any of them. Has anyone had good experiences from the meds? Please let me know.

Hi Rox,

I understand how you feel about the medicine, but you are only looking at the down side of it.  Yes some have side effects like any other medication, but many children and adults take them with little or no effect.  Remember that each person and their body is different .  If you look at any of the over the counter medicines or prescriptions that you have taken  and only read the side effects I doubt any of us would want to take them.  My 10 year old son Harrison has had 2 prolonged seizures and they were almost 5 years apart but after this second one 4/10/05 they wanted him on an AED.  I too was aprehensive and scared.  He stated on lamictal but he had an allergic reaction to it (although it is a great one for lots of people)  he has now been on Depekote ER 500mg 2 x a day.  He is doing great.  He has a little nausea but nothing he can't handle and he is energetic and so far seizure free.  I found it helpful to keep in close contact with his neuro and ask any ? over the phone, we started him slowly while looking for potential side effects.  Try and maintain a positive attitude , millions of people take daily meds for countless diseases and live a normal life and thats our hope for ur children.  Best of luck to you and your little girl.

God bless.

Medications are horrible for they all have side effects. I am coming slightly down from my meds. For I dont want them anymore. I will have to see how far down I can go. There are many other ways to get through this. Get on a good diet. taking vitamins, b complex, calcium, magnesium...omega three fatty acids... I stay on a low carb diet and good fats it is so important for the brain. Check into biofeedback too.check out my support group and in links and files.Lisahttp://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EpilepsyApproach/

I'm very new to this board and Epilepsy in general (first big seizure in April) but i'd have to say that it's inconcievable that any parent would deny the meds to a child. Side affects from medicine are irrelevent compared to a life filled with seizures. My only side affects from Lamictal have been some shakiness in the hands. To be honest, a couple of times it's been bad enough that it was difficult to use my computer at work, but way better than waking up with the paramedics putting me on to a strecher. Please don't hesitate to use the medical resources at you disposal.
