Trying to get off Dilantin

Thu, 01/26/2006 - 11:28
I'm trying to replace Dilantin with some other med that will have less side effects. The doctor tried Lamictal and it didn't work. Then I found out it wasn't really indicated for grand mal seizures. !#%!! Now my doctor wants to try Depakote. Can anyone give me some insight on changing drugs? Should I just stick with Dilantin because all these drugs have side effects that are just as bad? Thanks

I am also trying to get rid

I am also trying to get rid of Dilantin the Neurologist said it isn't doing me any good, it is doing me harm in fact.  He thinks it may be contributing to the seizures I was having last year.  So weird because I started taking Dilatin when I was 16 and it was all good until I was 52, I am 53 now.  I asked him if there could be any underlying causes causing them and he said he will find out if there are.  I hope so.  I know my balance is off and that could be why, there are other things as well.  The only thing that helped the Dilantin last year was Topomax, a little scared of withdrawing off of something I have been on for so long.  He raised my Topomax to 300 then started lowering my dilantin.  Maybe to fast.... he went from 100 and 35mg in the morning to 200 mg at night to 100 in the morning and 100 at night.  I had a seizure.  Maybe he is raising Topomax to 175 in morning and 175 at night for 10 days then I will be on 400.  I think I stay on that until I see him in Nov and he starts lowering it again.  Slower this time I hope.  I will ask him about it this time.  Nasty stuff.  I always knew there was side affects but I didn't know there were new and improved drugs.  Let me weigh the side effects.  I do not like the seizures, I am getting to old to beat myself up like that.  I hope it works this time.  It is almost worse going to the hospital, when I woke up there I didn't hurt, didn't feel sick and wasn't as disoriented, I thought good maybe it wasn't bad.  Then I went to the washroom, I was in emergency, they pointed the way and I woke up very sore.  Another one and they let me hit the ground hard.  Ouch.
