Eyesight problems on Topamax

Mon, 12/22/2008 - 15:29

I have been on Topamax for a few months and have developed "after-images". My eyes will hang on to an image and it will stay in my vision for a few seconds until it fades even though I'm looking somewhere else.

I also have trailing images from moving objects. I've also got awful double vision (from about 10+ feet away) but my neurologist seemed to doubt that it was true double vision as it was still present when he covered one of my eyes. It made me feel as though I was making it up!

Anyone else got this problem? I'm presuming it is the Topamax causing this as it is constant so I know its not a seizure.

I hope I have explained the "after-image" thing ok, not an easy thing to explain.

So glad to have found this

So glad to have found this thread, so sorry for all those suffering. I am like Dar, in that it was prescribed for chronic migraine. The insurance will only pay for 4 pills a month. I admit to using some mild hallucinogenics during a Native American sweat lodge rituals after which one sees tracers for a bit, but this happened yesterday when I was putting some glasses away. I have long hair and thought it got caught on something and finally just stood moving my hands around watching the tracers. No more Topamax for me. It hasn't even been a full month, I never got to the full dose. My doctor made it a point to warn me to drink lots of fluid to prevent heat stroke. This drug cuts down on sweating, can decrease appetite and he really emphasized if I had any change in vision, STOP taking it immediately. He said every patient is different but some never fully recover previous vision levels, sorry. Blessed Be.

I'm on 100mg topamax for

I'm on 100mg topamax for migraines. I have developed thinning of my optic nerves and cataracts in both eyes. My eyes were perfectly healthy 6 months ago. I am devastated and wish I had the information on possible eye damage prior to taking this medication...now it's too late. I need surgery!
