Does anyone have info about lamictal

Wed, 05/25/2005 - 10:46
Hi everyone,  Its been a long time since I've posted.  My son had been doing really well on 200  mg  TOPAMAX   2x daily

1200 mg  NEURONTIN  3x daily and 600 mg TRILEPTAL  1x daily & 900 mg 1x daily.  He had no seizures for 7 months.  Thats a really long record for him.  We thought we found the right mix our meds.  Then he started having liver problems, so now they are weaning him off only the TRILEPTAL and starting him on the LAMICTAL.   I wondered if anyone one else had this problem?  Anyone having success on LAMICTAL?  Thanks for any help!

Penny - I haven't posted but a few times because I am new to this site, but I do have some info in regards to what you're asking about. I was on a cocktail of 5 different meds, had the VNS which appeared to be helping so the doc lowered all of my meds. And she then put me on Lamictal 200 MG 4 times a day. My seizures decreased so much with only the VNS and Lamictal that we have eventually lowered the Lamictal to only 100 MG once daily. I also take a one a day complete vitamin, B-12 Complex & Calcium/Magnesium/Zinc W/copper 4 times a day. The cocktail of all of these vitamins are highly recommended by most Neuros as they help to regulate the nerve cells and the other things that your body needs in order to help you be seizure free to an extent and not too mention for your body in general! And now I pray and thank God that I am almost med free due to mainly the VNS & Lamictal. And as for side effects: occasional drowsiness, decreased appetite, somewhat nervous, emotional, forgetfulness, occasional repeating of myself & some upset stomach but nothing like that of those other meds! I haven't had anything so far (knock on wood) that is going to be detrimental to my health in a drastic way either now or in the future. There are some very good effects from this med though. With a lot of people, not all of course, the occurance of seizures do drop, if you're a female it helps enable you to regulate female things. In fact with all of the other meds that I have been on for the last 15 years (or so) I have been declared "infertile", but now with this med, my neurologoist & ob/gyn docs are really trying and helping for me to get pregnant! This med may have some downfalls as some people might say, but in my oponion it does have more good than bad. However, you'll have to discide that one on your own. I will tell you this though, Topamax is horrible! It has so many side effects that it's not even nice or funny. You can go to webmd.com and find out about those. I would recommend talking to your sons dr. about the VNS also. It is simple, easy, vertually painless and can lower him down to mearly one-two meds a day! I'd be happy to give you more info about all of the above if you'd like. Just e-mail me at kcrow511@sbcglobal.net. Again, the VNS & Lamictal have been a life saver for me, my family, friends & future family :-)This post has been rather longer than I indented, but I sure do hope that it helps you at least a little bit. I wish you & your son the best of luck with the change in meds. And like I said, ask the dr. about the vitamin cocktail and the VNS, it has worked for a lot of people including myself. Best wishes to you & your son, Kristi

Hi,  my son is 4 with Generalized Epilepsy (only absence seizures) and was put on Lamictal and at 25mg 2x a day, he has been seizure free since Nov 2004.  No bad side effects although his allergies and eczema seemed to be a little worse once he started this med, but a little Claritin for the allergies and Allegra for the Eczema when needed takes care of this.  He's doing great and getting ready to star Kindergarden in the fall.

Wendy,  How great is that!!!  I'm very happy for you that the lamictal is working so well.  I get discouraged but it must get even more discouraging for the people having to go through this.  Sometimes I feel like I can't stand it anymore.

Well, thank you for taking the time to post.  That sounds so hopeful!  God Bless
