Can Anyone Help me

Wed, 09/27/2006 - 23:16
Keppra is making my life miserable. I have every side effect possible. Finally my neurologist is cutting me down, he told me there would be no side effects. Does anyone know if this is true or not? I am on 2,000 a day going to 1,500.

I've had a miserable time with mood swings on Keppra and getting some killer headaches. At times tiredness and slight confusion as well. Keep in mind I take 1000mg of Keppra a day, 200mg of Topomax & 10mg of Clobazam for seizures, plus I'm on birth control pills. The biggest help for me, since stress sets me off was to join a gym. It has helped with weight gain, and REALLY helped control the mood swings. My neuro also wants me to consult my family doc about going off the birth control (that was just used to regulate my cycle - I actually have a back up in place). Hopefully taking away the pill means one less chemical and maybe the mood swings will stop. Time will tell. It's been about 4 mths that I've been on Keppra. Way less seizures, but the side effects do suck at times. I am really glad I joined the gym. Erin

Hi Erin, Thanks for replying. I am on 1750 a day of Keppra and cutting down slowly. Since I can't drive I bought a.m.& p.m. yoga. Very relaxing, can't wait to do it instead of just watching. My side effects don't allow me to lie flat or bend over yet. I heard yoga is also good for panic and anxiety attacks which is what I have sometimes. Take care, DixieLee

No problem DixieLee, I can't drive either. Lucky for me the gym is 4 blocks away from where I live, and the other location is 10 minutes away on the #7 Mainline. I live in a fairly large city where the bus gets me just about anywhere I need to be...and as my friends all put it, I'm living every female's fantasy, you stand on our balcony & we look at the back of the biggest mall in the region :) Good Luck with yoga. Take it really slow. If you find you can't lie flat on a floor much yet, one thing I'd suggest since I got into this lots when I couldn't get to a gym where we used to live try Pilates on a Ball. It is still a great work out, but less "bend-y" for lack of better way to put it than yoga. You just need a mat, the ball & an air pump. In total that cost me about $40 canadian. People at a Sportscheck store should be able to help you out. Then as you get great at it, add in 1-2 pound weights (I used little soup cans for awhile). That will add some variety, is equally relaxing and less hard on your back, knees and anxle. It's taken me awhile to get into yoga at the gym because I wrecked my ankle 4 years ago (ironically enough running to catch a bus....) and it still isn't quite right. Good Luck with Yoga, enjoy Pilates on a Ball if you decide to try that. ~ Erin
