Anyone Been Through This

Fri, 12/29/2006 - 14:51
I am a 22 year old female and I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy in January of this year.I was doing very well on just topomax until November when I started having five, or six seizures a day. My mom took me to the ER and the doc put me on 300 mg. of Dylantin. Since then I have been having the worst side effects. Dizziness, tiredness, blury vision and seeing weird objects from the topomax, nausea, and extreme thirst. I keep telling myself that it's better to have side effects than to have five seizures a day, but I don't know sometimes. Has anyone gone through this before. -Jordan.

I have been through it all with dilantin, tegretol and now depakote. So far the best for me is depakote although the side effect is the destruction of your white blood cells! I have been suffering from gran mal and partial seizures for over 40 years now. I came to realized that only God could help me and so stay in a state of fasting and praying and reading the Bible. I am please to say that I have not had a gran mal in over 10 years now even though I have reduced the depakote to 2 per day instead of 6 prescribed by my doc. My recommendation to all of you suffering from this condition is to turn to God. He can and will free you of this monster.

Hi Jordan, Please talk to the doctor about getting off Dilantin as it obviously doesn't agree with you. I realize it's less expensive in the USA, as it's an old drug, but due to that fact it also has a list of known side effects. I took Dilantin decades ago, but ODed so I haven't been on it since I was in my late teens. Know I wish you luck.. ~sol

I had real trouble with Dilantin, including dizziness, tiredness, and blurry vision. I would agree with you that it might be better than five seizures a day, however I would reccomend working with your Neurologist as there are many antiepileptic drugs. I ended up with a combination of Depakote and Trileptal that works, and with less side effects. This is very specific to the person though, and can be frustrating as you go through trying several different combinations. I wish you luck! -Michael
