Anyone Been Through This

Fri, 12/29/2006 - 14:51
I am a 22 year old female and I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy in January of this year.I was doing very well on just topomax until November when I started having five, or six seizures a day. My mom took me to the ER and the doc put me on 300 mg. of Dylantin. Since then I have been having the worst side effects. Dizziness, tiredness, blury vision and seeing weird objects from the topomax, nausea, and extreme thirst. I keep telling myself that it's better to have side effects than to have five seizures a day, but I don't know sometimes. Has anyone gone through this before. -Jordan.

Anytime you start a new med, it can cause all kinds of problems till you get used to it. Glad to hear that. Best of luck to you Lisa http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/epilepsyapproach/

Dilantan causes a lot of side effects but I found that the initial ones of nausea and dizziness went away once I was used to the medication. I also found that eating was especially helpful. When I didn't drink enough water/juice or whatever drink with the pills than it felt like they were stuck or something partway down, such an odd feeling. I found that if I wasn't hungry in the morning that drinking a lot of water helped with the nausea, but i could be alone on that one!

anniemarie: I to am on dilatin, last yr june,2006 had a grand-mal before that one it was 2 yrs free from e. they over dosed me on dilatin then I was put in hosp. Noe they want me off dilatin because of side affect and the effects it caused on me was sever slurred speech, and having trouble with memory to. when i was a child dilantin gave me no problems but Iam 41 now and dilantin is not for me. they started me on trileptal and started lowering the dilatin to get me offf it and now just recently the doc dropped me as a patient and told me I need a specialist and mind u this is a neuro doc saying this. So now I have to start all over with a new neuro doc.
