Dating someone with epilepsy?

Wed, 04/09/2014 - 09:41

Hi, I'm 17 years old and I've been dating my boyfriend for about a year now and he has seizures. He began having seizures here and there in the past year or two, it started at age 16 (he's 18 now)but it's been getting a lot worse, and a lot more frequent. I really care about him and it's beginning to worry me a lot more now. Especially because the doctors he's been going to cannot figure out what causes his seizures and the medication they've given him hasn't been working. I've read plenty of articles about how to treat someone when they have a seizure & articles about how people with epilepsy should discuss it with their significant other, but there's not much information on what to do when you're dating someone with epilepsy. I just don't know how to help him, or how to react in these situations, or how to talk to him about it, because this is a pretty touchy subject with him. I just don't know how to handle this, and I'd like to hear opinions on how I can.

Welcome The short bacisics on seizures is an electrical impulse going off wrong in the brain causing a chain reaction once the chain reaction is over the seizure is over. They will and do drain energy. If you want to picture one get a set of dominoes and take them out. Line them up setting them about 1 inch apart standing on end. Tap the first dominoe lettying it fallingo the next. That tap was an electrical impulse going off wrong watching the dominoes fall into each other is the chaim reaction. what his medications are to do is become a finger stopping the first dominoe from falling into the second. While I am not a teen and have not been one for many years. I do know what it's like from the person with epilepsy's point of view. I see mereloaded posted a comment to your post. I can do nothing but agree with her comment. It is a touchy subject for him because he doesn't want to freak you out <<<< I had friends get really freaked out.. Some came back around and after answering some questions they became really good friends. . Oh and as for being called weirdo that was light to many different things I got called. . Just be there for him. Support him if you know what to do while he is in a seizure then by all means to that and assist him. Many of the kids I was arround knew nothing about epilepsy except that the people went into fits or spasses. when in reality a lot more have seizures many people don't think about. I still have one brother that want to force things which I do not to do. But then he has always been a control freak, But I love my brother dearly. My other brothers and sister well comment and ask questions now and then. But unlike cancer epilepsy does not come up in conversations easily. We are trying and have made advances. As mereloaded sait epilepsy is treatable and for getting bad in the teen years she hit the nail on the head. I grew like a weed and my dosages needed changing often. I wouls say as mereloaded be what tou are a carring kind and lovely young lady who cares. I hope this helps Joe

Hey joe! That song is awesome

Hey joe! That song is awesome, it is an hymn to feminism. I just discovered that song, it came out before I was even born, and I think is so true. Women are made strong and resilient for a reason, to deal throughout it all. To multi task to birth children, to handle it all. Females are said to be the "weakest gender" but I categorically disagree, our bodies while they may not have physical strength the fortitude that we have is unmeasurable. Thank you for your comment!
