Were you fine and then get suddenly worse?

I'm just wondering if anyone else had went through treatment for their epilepsy, done well for awhile and then all of a sudden had them get worse without warning? Did you ever find out what triggered them to get worse?

IS THIS MY LIFE OR WHAT!!! :) I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH EPILEPSY WHEN I WAS 12 years old. I had two seizures within a two year time period. I WENT SEVEN YEARS SEIZURE FREE AND THEN OTU OF THE BLUE THEY CAME BACK. AT THIS POINT, I'M HAVING ON AN AVERAGE ATLEAST ONE SEIZURE A YEAR. WHICH TO SOME MAY NOT BE BAD, BUT FACTOR IN THE EPISODES WHICH I NEVER HAD BEFORE AND NOW HAVE QUITE OFTEN AND JUST THE THOUGHT OF HAVING ONE FREAKS ME OUT.

Yup that's me! From summer 1999 up until July 2006, I was seizure-free on 200 mg of Tegretol (not even Tegretol - the generic - carbemazepine) a day - then near the end of last July I had a grand mal which landed me in the ER - my Tegretol level was way low so they increased it - I was fine until the end of October when I had another seizure that landed me in the ER - again my Tegretol level was still low so they increased it to 3 200 mg tablets a day. Since then I've had a few partial seizures which haven't required emergency room visits (thankfully) and which my husband was able to talk me through . . . in addition to the 3 200 mg tablets of Tegretol a day (and I'm on namebrand Tegretol now, not the generic, to make sure I'm getting the full 200 mg of medicine) I'm also on 50 mg twice a day of Topomax for the partial seizures that I occasionally have in the evenings. I'm *hoping* all that's going to be sufficient to get my seizures BACK under good control!! But you asked if I ever found out what triggered them to get worse . . . no, I have yet to figure out what triggered my seizures to get worse - i went for a physical not too long ago just to rule out anything that might be physically wrong with me - my doctor said something about the neurons in my brain wearing out or something as a possibility for why my seizures are suddenly getting worse - I can't remember the exact wording he used lol. My neurologist has only been able to find a little bit of seizure activity while I was sleeping on a routine EEG, and nothing on an ambulatory EEG. *sigh* I guess all I can do at this point is get my seizures back under good control, and not try to stress out over it too much, which probably WILL make my seizures worse. HTH, Erica
