Seizures During Sleep

Wed, 02/11/2009 - 22:16

Hi, I'm new to this site. I have most of my seizures in my sleep or in the morning after waking up.. my last one being two days ago. It seems that either illicit drugs, alcohol or lack of sleep bring most of my seizures on, and I'm working on getting them under control by giving up these things rather than taking my medication, I find the medication Valpro has some bad side effects.

I think my last seizure  was a big one becauseI have been a scattered mess since then, I've slept for two days straight now and I have yet to leave the house. I can't think straight so if this doesn't make any sense I hope u understand why. My whole body is aching and my memory is slowly returning.

Anyways I'm almost 25 and I was diagnosed about 2 1/2 years ago.. does anybody else experience sleep related seizures?.. I truly believe if I can get enough sleep I will  get my epiliepsy under control.

Thanks for any of your comments.

Hi Ephyk, Thank you for your reply and thoughtful comments. I'm sorry to hear that you have seizures too. So far Kevin hasn't had another seizure since the first series of 5 or so last Saturday. The really frightening thing beyond thinking he was going to die during the initial seizures series was that it took him 19 hours to wake up and during that 19 hours, every time he came up from the sedation, he was totally combative - unaware of where he was - not recognizing me or anyone else he knows. He went thru the full grand mal and some and I really hope he never has them again. The doctor is convinced that if I wasn't home when this happened that he would have died so I'm like your husband in that every time Kevin falls asleep, my anxiety is super high and I watch him like a hawk. I'm able to work from home for the next 2 weeks so I can make sure nothing happens but I'm rather terrified about leaving him alone after that. Time will guide us..and thank you again! -Mette

Melissa has the seizures. I do not belive that even if you do get enough sleep,it isnt going to help with your seizures. We have seizures for a reason, so we cannot control when how or when we will have another. I also suffer from haveing a majority or mine in my sleep also, and I DO NOT ever miss a dose. Even though I take my meds, I continue to have them. A majority of times I know when I have had one because I am disoriented, my body is in alot of pain, and I have severe fatigue for several days afterwards. Along with plenty of memory loss. I do no drugs or drink. If I drink alcohol it makes my legs and feet tingle and numb, so I can't handle it. In my opinion, your first priority should be giving up drugs and alcohol. And get your self into a neurorologist, get started on a medication regement, and maybe even see a counselor to give you extra support for those changes you will be going thru.

Don't give up, be strong, and always remember someone will be there for you.
