Question- Do you know what's going on during your seizures?

Sat, 07/08/2006 - 09:07
I've been told my seizures start as Simple Partials(my aura), then progress to Complex Partials and then to Secondary Generalized grand mals. Most of what I've read says you lose consiousness or have change in thinking during this. I don't. I am fully aware 98% of the time. My thinking isn't compromised. Exp...I was driving a car, felt my aura immediatly put car in park, even took keys out of ignition---my friend kept asking me what I was doing..I knew, but I couldn't speak to explain it to her and immediately had a grand mal....during the grand mal, i was aware of her getting out of the car i think i scared her half to death. Another exp was I at home aura started moved quickly to seizure. I knew my brother was the only one home and in the basement. I made my way to stairs , i couldn't speak and was jerking, i also knew i shouldn't try to walk down stairs. so I sat down by back door and used my jerking arm to repeatly pound on the back door, knowing he would hear and wonder who was at the door. He came up to find me having a sz. Is anyone else aware during their grand mals. It's a blessing i guess, but also a curse. It's so scary becuse you feel and know what's happening to you and you can hear all the panic around you.

I have grand mals "in my sleep" but I wake up with the aura and usually have just enough awareness to motion/toss my arm onto my husband beside me although I cannot speak to tell him what I feel is about to happen... as I slip out of counsciousness I can sometimes hear things going on around me. I am thankful that I am not awake from tht pt forward! kristin

I have GM in my sleep, too. The tightening of my vocal cords wakes me up, and I have consciousness just long enough to recognize where I am, understand what's happening to me, and have a split second to try to control my muscles. It hasn't worked, so far. I lose consciousness, finish the seizure, and wake up hours later, sometimes not even knowing it happened, until I remember the vocal cord tightening, and ask my hubby "did I have a seizure?". He's so cool by giving me time to remember it myself. It helps me feel better about my ability to remember. Other times, when the seizure is harsh, I don't have to remember, my body tells me. Sometimes I wake up and it's hard to remember anything. UGH! Luckily, it's rare that I have a bad one anymore.

Hello Sandy, How are you? I have 4 kinds that I know of, and each seems to have a different level of awareness. I have simple partials that progress into complex partials, and absence sz's (used to be petit mal) that progress into Tonic/Clonic (Gran Mal). The partials are Temporal Lobe Sz's, and the doctor has yet to locate the origin of the T/C's. I do also get simple and absence sz's that do not progress into the other. The Simples, which are also auras, I am very very aware of having, from the very first sign of the onset of one. It's hard to describe, but I get almost a cramp in the bottom of my stomach (kind of similar to sheer panic) and that's usually my first clue one is coming. Now, once I make it to the complex partial, I have an odor I smell. and I get some extremely strange visuals, also. I am one of those ppl that either has a phrase repeating in my head, or just a race of weird thoughts during one. After the sz is over I will be able to remember none of these things, but I am aware that I had a sz, and if I was talking to someone, or in the middle of doing something I pick right back up where I left off as if nothing had happened. I can function during the simples, but it's almost like I go somewhere for a second or two during complex partials. The T/C's on the other hand, is an entirely different story. First, I am not aware of the absence auras at all. From what I'm told I stop whatever I'm doing, kind of look around blankly, and once I'm good and pale and the sweating starts, I hit the floor and the T/C begins. Second, every time I have one, I have some kind of "out of body experience" and it feels like I go somewhere (I have never told that to ANYONE before, and I just posted it in a public forum...plese don't think I'm TOO WEIRD). Those usually leave me unable to function for hours, and I could sleep after one for a week. There was a time after a T/C I'd come-to on the floor, picked my head up, looked around, put it back down on my arm, and went back to sleep. The fire department is there, and I just thought I was napping (on the FLOOR, with a knot on my head the size of a tennis ball, no less) but I had no clue I had one until the firemen started asking me if I knew what city I was in. I had also found out that day my dog had saved my life alerting my room mates about a phone chord around my neck, and I had her trained. Hope you're enjoying your weekend, Susan
