Nighttime seizure activity

Thu, 08/24/2006 - 07:01
Hi all. I am starting to suspect nocturnal seizures based on a pattern of waking feeling a surge of panic/fear, then going right back to sleep only to awake a little while later w/ the same feeling. Took me two hours to get into a deep sleep b/c this happened for so long last night. It even happened while I was drowsy and laying in bed waiting for my husband to come to bed. I have read that noc seizures are often tonic-clonic. I only appear to have simple partials, so is it possible these are also simple-partials? Does anyone else experience this and if so, what can you tell me? Thanks, Sam

Sam, Prior to my temporal lobectomy, I had many nocturnal events--simple and complex partials. I too awoke with the "feeling of panic" you describe. These seizures were accompanied by many automatisms such as repeated swallowing and lip-smacking. I also experienced a secondarily generalized seizure in Fall 2004, which really led to my firm epilepsy diagnosis, even though I knew something was up for about 15 years. The nocturnal event involved my wandering around the bedroom rearranging furniture before my wife found me. My response to her was to ask, "Are you my mother." I also defecated profusely all throughout the room and was covered head to toe in my own fecal matter.

Mine seem similiar to yours. My nocturnal seizures happen when I had just gone to sleep. Although I don't have them as severe now as I did when I was a lot younger, I still have slight seizures where it wakes me up. I then fling myself out of bed to try and get away from it.( obviously you can't and I wake with some great bruises ). I never used to do this and it seems I do it instictively.
