mood swings and seizures

Wed, 03/22/2006 - 07:50
Goodmorning, Joyce Here: I have noticed the last two seizures I have had there was some moodyness before and after. Is this a normal thing and does any one else get the same way? With my headaches I have noticed some changes with my mood and sleep patterns, I have only been able too get around 4-5 hours of sleep a night. Any idea's as to how I can get more then that without having to take any over the counter sleeping aids? I know that with my first semester exam around the corner has certianly added to the stress I have been trying to deal with. I am very afraid that I wont pass, I am not a ready as I should be, and my ability to remain focused on my studies has not been very good. I am determined though too finish this and do my best to get my Associate's degree. I will be posting my story hopefully by Friday and hope many of you will read it. Untill later, Joyce

Hi Joyce, I've had good luck sleeping when I take some Valerian Root an hour or 2 before getting into bed. Also, deep breathing exercises. Sometimes I picture myself laying in a medow near a lake and look at the clouds. I find this very relaxing and it keeps me from thinking too much (which makes it so difficult to sleep). Good luck!

HI everyone! Sleep can be a problem for many people and for many different reasons. Sometimes seizures are occurring at night that may awaken people. Insomnia can also be a sign of stress, depression, or side effects of some of the meds. However, sleep problems such as sleep apnea tend to occur more often in people with seizures -if the problems persist, talk to the doctor. They may suggest a sleep study (which is different than a sleep-deprived EEG). If otc meds are tried, be careful - some have alcohol or other products that can aggravate seizures. Hey, Joyce. I kinda know what you mean about being "moody" before and after seizures. I get depressed. I'm always depressed, and have mood swings 'cause of my meds (Tegretol XR), but even moreso after a seizure. It usually takes me a good week to shake it off. I usually get depressed 'cause I feel like I'm not normal, and I wish I didn't have the big E SO SO bad. Then I turn it inward, and it turns to self-loathing. I try as hard as I can to ignore it, by doing all kinds of stuff, but sometimes I just can't help it. I mean, what can any of us do, right? I don't know what kind of seizures you're having, but I have grand-mals. If you have any kind of seizure that takes you out of consciesness, what I do is be thankful that I woke up at all. I know it's embarassing, and that it's so disempowering, but like I said before, at least you woke up from it.
