Keppra and grapefruit juice

Tue, 04/01/2014 - 20:21
Anyone know if grapefruit affects Keppra levels? When I was on Tegretol, I was advised not to eat grapefruit for many years. The Keppra label has no mention of grapefruit at all. Would love to incorporate it back into my diet, but only if it's safe.

Good point - I found a post on an 'ask the online pharmacist' website where someone asked this same question. She said no interactions between Keppra and grapefruit juice. Off to the produce department tomorrow :)

It should be no problem since keppra is excreted through the kidney and not the liver like other aeds, that is why it has fewer interactions with other drugs or food.

 Grapefruit is fine while on

Grapefruit is fine while on Keppra, Keppra is a completely stable medication . Grapefruit increases the amount of carbamazepine the body absorbs. It has no such effect with Keppra.-Neurologist
