Controlling seizures without medication

Wed, 04/22/2009 - 13:27

I hope that this does not turn out to be a controversial subject.

Let me just start by saying that I don't know what kind of seizure disorder I have.  I have had only 3 EEGs between the time I was 19 and now 35.

After the first EEG, my doctor told me I had epilepsy and put me on Tegretol.  I took the medication only for a year, and then moved over to Klonopin, which I have taken ever since.  When I was 22, I had another EEG, and the doctor told me I was fine. I was living overseas at the time of my 2nd EEG and I really can't vouch for the expertise of the doctor.

Despite what the doctor told me of my EEG, my seizures continued and had never stopped.

The seizures I was having were incredibly breif lasting only a second or two.  My eyes would roll back into my head, I would NOT fall to the ground.  I'd lose muscle control from the neck and above, and kind of twitch my head back and forth with very small jerks that were almost unnoticeable.

In any event, I was sick with the flu recently, and during my doctor's visit, I had one of these seizures, and he insisted I see a nuerologist again.

I had an EEG and MRI, and I've been told again that I have a seizure disorder.  I just started taking Lamictal.

I'm very keen to how my body responds to foods, stress, and specific situations.

If I were able to simply avoid all the situations that trigger my seizures which in most cases are stress-induced,  I believe that I could live seizure-free without medication.

But that is not possible.  What IS possible - is for me to overcome the situations that trigger my seizures with a different mental outlook. Although I have not been able to successfully change my mental approach to the situations that cause my seizures all the time,  I have had success in many instances.

To sum it up, I strongly believe that it would be possible to take control of my seizure disorder through a non-medicated approach. Perhaps my seizures are just different.  I don't even know at this point what kind of seizures I have.  All I know is that both of my EEGs in the US showed with certainty that I have a seizure disorder. I have left a message with my doctor today, to get more information on his diagnosis, and will post it here when I receive that information (see below).

I will continue taking my Lamictal.  What I want to know is if anybody agrees that it could be possible to correct a form of seizures with a non-medicated mental approach; any doctors or patients?

I am not a scientologist.  In fact, I'm not even sure what their approach to a seizure disorder is.  I am just stating what I think I have the power to do, and want to find out if anybody shares those ideas.

Update

I spoke with my doctor today.  The seizures that I have been having are simple and complex focal seizures.

I find it amazing that so few

I find it amazing that so few people talk about hiding one's reactions or feelings as a precursor to stress.  I learned in a self-help substance abuse program designed by ex-addicts (not seizure meds, but all drugs) - but I had managed to avoid being confronted, for I was afraid of my inability to answer.  But there I learned to be confronted over slights I caused to others (indifference to their concerns because I had outther goals -  for instance), and I really needed to learn to stop defending or explaining, but felt so much better, as did the person confronting me, when I considered what the other person experienced, apologize perhaps, but change my behavior to notice them more.  My new openness to interactions helped clear the air, helped me avoid fear of lack of insight about others, and though it is still not easy in some situations, I learned the destructive effect of trying to hide my own reactions, without finding a way to deal with the person or issue in a more open way.  Learning that being confronted is being confronted by a temporary set of issues that I could consider (rather than moral or character blame in general)  I lost lifelong major physical symptoms of digestion and muscle pain.  Instead of trying to always act correctly, I was more able to listen to complaints of others, knowing that willingness to listen and change goes a long way, without making me weaker.Later, I was responsible for my youngest brother, who had seizures - and I taught him first to communicate and listen - not easy, but it really helped when he learned that confrontation can be intended to find what went wrong, and the help him learn to complete tasks with more awareness and skill.  I worked to teach him to communicate better (after an outburst, write down 3 things you did right, and 3 things you did wrong) - finally over years, he was able to communicate more reliably and get help in life areas he had hid his fears of failures. At the same time, he needed positive growth, and I focused my efforts on finding places where he could practice and develop new skills at his pace (exercise, walking, reading, being in groups, effective self care - his current brain injury program also helps him over time, learn some music skills) - but with my focus on learning to understand others while growing, his seizures diminished greatly, and his meds were reduced from 3 pills to only Dilantin for years.  I learned to talk with neurologists, insisting on distinguishing between short lived anxiety seizures, and those that persisted.  If I could help my brother by close listening to learn of his specific fears - like if he had a seizure or two before a visit from family, including me - or once he thought he finally had a roommate in a residence, but the staff moved the roommate without explaining, so he felt exposed and ashamed of being a social failure (when the reason for the move was medical)..  Radical honesty is a decent book, for it's not easy to speak up for oneself, when the world expects people to fit in, deal with confusion quickly, always be pleasant, or else be blamed for self pity etc, laziness, deliberate obstruction - etc - all guesses by others, ignoring specific struggles and efforts to improve.
