video to explain to kids?

Mon, 08/23/2004 - 09:52
My kids are 9 and 5. We never really told them anything about my sz cuz there was no need to. Now there is, unfortunately, as my son had the honor and privilege of watching my grand mal in public last wk. (And silly me, without my Medicalert card that day., Growwwwwwl!) I'd love to hear about a video or something for families about this. I'm sure EFA has one? Does anyone know of one? Thanx

hi rhiannon, michael had mentioned that you were having a rough time, but when i went to reply i was having some technical difficulties... and by the time those resolved, it slipped my mind that i wanted to reply to you. i postponed telling my kids about my E. i'm not really sure what all the reasons are, but i know that a large part of it was the fact that there is no linguistic analog to my seizures. i can't describe them to myself, so describing them to my children seemed impossible. i'm not saying that is a valid reason, but i know that was part of what got in the way for me. my oldest was not one of those kids that you could fob off with a simple explanation... i don't know that there is a perfect moment to tell your kids... if your epilepsy never comes up in conversation, then it won't be part of the "white noise" of their childhood.... i'm sure we all remember suddenly understanding something we heard reference to our entire lives, but didn't understand until we were mature enough.... if you have great control with little or no side effects and you are busy raising your child and working, then epilepsy can very easily take the back burner... you won't remember that you have it, except when you feel a bit wonky around flourescents and then, if you are like me, you will quickly move on the next topic (no perseveration!) ... i think meds can be such a habit that you can take them for years and not really think about why you are taking them, so it isn't even as though taking meds reminds you that you have E... well, it was that way for me when i was running around being the super school and soccer mom.... i got around to telling my kids about my epilepsy when i needed to change meds due to pain issues from my med. it wasn't a big deal, except that they were a bit hurt i hadn't told them sooner... but i think they have forgiven me '-) i'm sure you will find a way to reassure your son. "tincture of time" is an excellent cure for some problems. when my dad was out visiting he showed me a card in his wallet that had all his medical information on it, just in case i needed it. your son might feel reassured by knowing he can show just such a card to the ambulance man...kayakmom wrote me instructions on how to post a live link and i can't find the icons she is talking about... so i think it is my computer... http://www.epilepsytoronto.org/people/talking/vol2/index.htmlthis is a very good story... but i'm not having success getting it to show up live.... this is what kayakmom wrote me... "I am so glad you emailed me. I saw the question but somehow now cannot post!I could do the hyper link but nothing else!!To do a hyper link you look on the tool bar at the top of the reply screen. There is a world and chain icon. Click on that if you have a copied link (Idid a copy of yours, right click on it and click copy) then you take outtheir HTTP, PASTE in your link (right click and click on paste)It should work!"is the toolbar the grey bar that says : "cancel add permissions help" ? because i can't see an icon... anywhere..... BUT i am very disorganized visually so i appreciate the patience. the only other bar i can see is the grey one that has the subject line in it...since i can't see the icon, does anyone remember how to write html to post a live link? i haven't done that in ages and ages... but there was a time when i knew how to do it...
