Short-term memory loss post- seizure

Sat, 06/04/2005 - 14:56
Please, does anyone identify with this problem? My son, 21yo now, has always found that after a seizure he has no memory of the past 2-6 hours preceding the seizure.e.g. went out to tea with his friend to celebrate their anniversary and had a seizure later that night. The following day he could not remember anything of that evening from when I had dropped him at her place at 6.30pm. Still doesn't till this day 2yrs later. (by all accounts they had a lovely time..)He finds this aspect of his condition the most upsetting. This is just one of many examples. My heart aches seeing the sad look on his face as we piece together his movements on a particular day. This doesn't help when trying to identify auras etc. either as he doesn't remember.Does anyone find this happens to you?I have read many posts about memory in general and see this in him too, but not seen much about this other aspect. Thanks for your time,Maryanne.

My name is Faisal, I'm 30 yo and I'm an engineer and I have general seizure. At work I had to write everything down so I can keep my experience because of short term memory loss!.. I was sad and devastated.. This situation continued for two years, and I had to find a solution, I mean there has to be a something to do to stop this issue, and my doctor seemed helpless, I kept looking and I saw 3 more doctors then I found my savior (Lamictal) 150 mg day, and 150 mg night! and since then I never experienced a seizure or memory loss! There is a solution somewhere but some people don't know how to get it.Now I'm on Lamictal for 5 years. Everything looks fine, no seizure or memory issues.. We have plan now me and my doctor to start withdrawing..

I don’t usually post on these

I don’t usually post on these but felt the need to reply to you... I have been on Lamictal for 20 years now though have had to increase my dose to 500mg and add topamax 200mg to my daily regime also as I kept having breakthrough seizures. Lamictal was/is wonderful however, after 5 years of no seizures on 300mg when I first started it (the position you are in right now), I dropped to the bathroom floor with a 3 min tonic clinic. From there every year or so I get a charming reminder that I have epilepsy and need daily meds (last reminder was Saturday). Some have left me more damaged than others - broken ribs, bruised jaw, split chin - all with significant memory loss. Why I am replying to you is because of your reference to withdrawing your meds... if they are the only thing that stopped you from having such bad seizures and memory loss, and you were on 300mg a day - not a low dose - withdrawing seems like a big call. Do you need to come off lamictal or simply want to? It’s side effects are limited - from what you said your quality of life is better now. Why risk the change?
