Short-term memory loss post- seizure

Sat, 06/04/2005 - 14:56
Please, does anyone identify with this problem? My son, 21yo now, has always found that after a seizure he has no memory of the past 2-6 hours preceding the seizure.e.g. went out to tea with his friend to celebrate their anniversary and had a seizure later that night. The following day he could not remember anything of that evening from when I had dropped him at her place at 6.30pm. Still doesn't till this day 2yrs later. (by all accounts they had a lovely time..)He finds this aspect of his condition the most upsetting. This is just one of many examples. My heart aches seeing the sad look on his face as we piece together his movements on a particular day. This doesn't help when trying to identify auras etc. either as he doesn't remember.Does anyone find this happens to you?I have read many posts about memory in general and see this in him too, but not seen much about this other aspect. Thanks for your time,Maryanne.

Hi, I have also come to find that before and after a seizure to have memory loss, some time a full day? or what has happened before and after the seizure? My day is just a total blank? is there any alternative medication that can be taken daily to actually prevent this? I am 38 yrs old, and seems that it is escalating as the seizures increase in duration or the worse it gets? It has never been this bad, but has actually become a problem in the past 6 months. any advise would be appreciated. Thanks Marzelle

You might consider speaking

You might consider speaking with your doctor about your memory concerns as memory loss may be caused by many problems, including anxiety, medications, the aging process and disease. Anti-seizure drugs may affect patients in different ways. In therapeutic and toxic doses, they may affect thinking processes and memory. A person usually will not remember the seizure itself. Infrequent, brief seizures do not cause further memory loss. Temporal lobe epilepsy affects the short term memory processing center of the brain, and if seizures arising from this area are not well controlled, memory difficulty may be a problem. Problems with learning and memory can cause frustration for people with epilepsy. Medications may sometimes slow a person's ability to process new information or may affect memory. The seizure disorder itself may be involved, depending upon the part of the brain in which it comes from. A patient may want to use ideas such as making notes and lists as memory aids. If these problems are causing problems in a patient's daily life or are getting worse, the physician should be asked for help. Adults and children with temporal lobe epilepsy may have memory processing difficulties which cause learning problems. It is important for persons with epilepsy to be tested for memory difficulties in order to assist in making accommodations for them in school or the workplace. Im 34 years old and Just had

Im 34 years old and Just had my 4th fit last Sunday. I've been abroad working in Germany and came home, picked up my son and took him for a swim at the beach. Dropped him off at his mother's again that same afternoon and woke up the next day Monday bruised on my left side (chest) and bad eye vision. I don't remember the work trip, nor any conversations I had during that weekend on phone etc. Only reason why I knew what had happened over the weekend was because I could track the events down through messages and papers etc. Luckily my son is very understanding and cool with it unlike his mother who is now giving me a lot of stress about spending time with him. I'm always open for chat so please do send a pm and let's talk experience :)
