MEDICAL ALERT I.D.'s

Wed, 11/17/2004 - 14:25

HI I am wondering if anybody else has had the same problem as I am having. My Dr. has told me that I need to get some sort of Medical I.D. to wear. because as most of you know that when you have a seizure after you are unable to remember things that are important like where you are and how you got there. My problem is I have looked and look but everything I find is so exspensive. I want to register with the medical alert system which seems like the best way to go because my Dr. would be contacted right away but I can't afford a good bracelet. I don't want something cheep that I will have to replace everytime I turn around, but spending $500.00 is not something I can do.

is there anybody who can recomend a good place to buy a good medical I.D. bracelet or even just the charms?

    thank you for any help.

rocknroll I HAVE BEEN READING ALL OF THIS, AND EVERYONE IS GIVING GOOD ADVICE. NOT HAVING A BRACELET IS A CONCERN OF MINE. I REALLY NEED TO HAVE ONE, BUT SO MUCH WOULD NEED TO BE WRITTEN ON IT THAN EPILEPSY. NO MRI'S...3 BRAIN ANUERISMS CLIPPED, ALLERGIES TO MEDS (A TWO PAGE LIST), NO IODINE, ETC. I KEEP A LIST OF MY ALLERGIES AND IN BIG PRINT THAT I CAN'T HAVE MRI'S, BUT IT SCARES ME THAT NO ONE WOULD SEE THAT, IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO ME, AND I WOULD HAVE THE CLIPS PULLED OUT OF THE ANEURISMS. I WORRY MORE ABOUT THAT THEN THE E. BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE INSTANT HEMORRAGING, AND ENOUGH SAID. NOW THAT THE E. IS GETTING WORSE, AND CHANGES MY BEHAVIOR, AND I APPEAR TO KNOW WHAT I AM DOING, BUT HAVE NO CLUE, THAT HAS BECOME A CONCERN ALSO. I COULD GET ARRESTEDOR PUT IN A PSYCH HOSPITAL AND GIVEN THOSE AWFUL MEDS, IF SOME OF THIS POST ICTAL ATTACKS CAUSE THE BEHAVIOR I HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY DO. I DON'T KNOW IF I HAVE DONE SOME OF THESE STRANGE THINGS WHEN I AM ALONE. MY QUESTION IS: I HAVE LOOKED AND LOOKED, AND EVERYTHING I HAVE FOUND IS THAT THE ENGRAVING IS VERY EXPENSIVE FOR NO MATTER HOW CHEAP THE BRACELET IS. I LIVE ON SSI, AND I CAN'T AFFORD THE COST OF THE BRACELET OR OF HAVING MEDICALERT, UNLESS MEDICALERT HAS SOME SORT OF SLIDING SCALE FOR LOW INCOME. I KNOW I COULD ASK THEM, BUT I JUST WONDERED IF THERE IS A DIFFERENT ALTERNATIVE BRACELET. I CAN'T WEAR A NECKLACE EVER. AND NOW IS WORRIES ME BECAUSE I AM READING TOO MANY STORIES ABOUT NO ONE EVER LOOKING AT THE BRACELET. ANY SUGGESTIONS, ANYBODY? I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR YEARS WITH NO SUCCESS. I WAS NEVER BOTHERED BY MRI'S OR CTSCAN, IN FACT, THEY PUT ME TO SLEEP. FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, EVERY TIME I HAVE A CTSCAN, EVEN IT IS CONFIRMED TO ME OVER AND OVER THAT IT IS A CTSCAN AND NOT AN MRI, IT MAKES ME NERVOUS. I REALLY NEED SOMETHING EYECATCHING. THE TATOO IS A GREAT IDEA.......BUT I AM ALLERGIC TO DYES! ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTION FOR THIS MAJOR PROBLEM, OTHER THAN MEDICALERT, WHICH SOUNDS LIKE EXACTLY WHAT I NEED, BUT DON'T KNOW THAT I CAN AFFORD. JAN

Hello, Ive bought a medic alert braclet for 80 dollars that is solid sterling silver which would last a long time! It is sort of like in investment but its really nice. They do have some for 500 but those are gold or gold and silver together. There is another place called American Medical ID that makes a really nice silver necklace in gold or silver that is the size of a nickel, and engraved on the back with the medical symbol on the front in a nice embossed style. Those are nice but i think they are just not starting to use a filing system as well similar to medic alert- i went with both actually. But just Medic Alert has a file on me. Medic Alert seems to be the best- and the first set up in the states, i believe- plus you can modify tou file every time it changes. Take care! Crystal and her guide Umbro

I use MedicAlert. I have had the same bracelet since 2005 and it is still holding up, though there was a thick plasticesque material on the front to protect the logo that is chipping, granted it's older so I'm not complaining. Recently I also invested in a thumb drive that has all of my information on it from Medic Alert as well that was around $50.00 with shipping and taxes and everything.
