Epilepsy and sterilization

Thu, 03/17/2005 - 09:38
Hi! My fiance has been on epilepsy medication since he was nine years old and know is 28. We plan on having natural children in the future and we are aware that there is a chance he is sterile because of his medications. I was wondering if anyone knew for sure some of the medications that are known to cause sterilization in men. I also would love it if someone could provide some resources such as websites to aid me in learning more about this subject. Thanks to all who read and reply to my question. Manprasert

My boyfriend has epilepsy and he is on Lyrica along with two other meds. I was reading up on Lyrica and it said it Could cause a man to be less fertile and to talk to your dr if you plan to father a child. He has an appointment later this month and we are going to talk to his doctor about it. My boyfriend wants to father children more than anything in the world and when I showed him the info about Lyrica he got very upset and said that if he has to he will go off the med so he can be a daddy. I told him not to go off the meds until he has talked to his dr first. He had surgery about 5 years ago to place an implant and is on three different meds (including the Lyrica) and hada seizure about a month ago but that was his first in almost 4 1/2 years. The meds and everything are helping so I don't want him to risk anything yet. He was already scared to tell me he was epileptic because he's had girlfriends that have left him because of it. I already knew because I'm really good at piecing symptoms together. I should have gone to school to be a doctor because I've rarely been wrong. I would never leave someone just because they have a condition they can't control. That would be like him leaving me because of my heart condition. If anyone else knows anything about Lyrica and sterility I would appreciate any feedback too. Once we talk to his dr I will post what I learn.

Depakote if it is a over a certain amount can cause a man to have fertility issues. I believe the amount is around 2500-3000 and up. Basicly the the sperm don't mature fully so thus no babies. I have never heard of any other AED that causes that problem. I know that some can cause sexual arousal problems in both men and women.
