Do you consider auras to be seizures

Mon, 12/06/2004 - 10:57
My husband had epilepsy and had surgery a little over two months ago. He has had auras on and off for the past two days, no seizures. However, when I called his doctors office the nurse said that auras are little seizures. I never heard that before and now am heartbroken because if I tell my husband that he will lose it. Has anyone else heard that before?Jackie

Jackie:

The only way to really be sure is to get an EEG.  Maybe they are not, maybe they are something like panic attacks.  Maybe he is nervous about ever having a seizure again...  These psychological things can take a toll.  I know that after my son had surgery I still jump at every little thing and even have nightmares that he is having seizures.  I still find it hard to sleep through the night.  It's a big adjustment and depending on how much tissue they removed, it could just be some physiological changes.  But it's best to be sure so they know how to treat it.

My neurologist who is from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota told me that auras are seizures. I did not know that either. So now I know and deal with them- they do not always go any futher than just the smells and bells and minor distortions but I write them down and keep a log of them.  I did do some research and yes they are seizures.

I'm just wondering because I'm a little confused.  Has this aura been non-stop for the last few weeks?  That seems out of the ordinary.  If that is the case, they should really be taking that more seriously.  And if it's not too personal, could you explain the aura more-or is it just the stomach feeling?  Just curious.

My best wishes to you and your husband.
