Complex Partial Seizures

Tue, 03/22/2005 - 11:40
How do you parents with kids with partial seizures cope with the medical system? My daughter who suffers from complex partial seizures had a seizure this morning at the school bus stop. The ambulance took her to the ER. The ER told me they believe she is faking! She has only had about six seizures since August, 2004 but they all take the same form. Does anyone else get as frustrated as I feel right now? My daughter is 15.

hi,  I have four different types of seizures.  Until I had the "big" one at 18, I just got a fair amount of fussing at by parents and teachers.  The big problem is there has been so little information about epilepsy, what it is and how it occurs in the general public.  The fact that there are a myrid of ways for this condition to emerge depending on what part of the brain is affected doesn't help the confusion.

I would like to see educators get a course on this and other maladies like MS when they have to take their mandatory education updates.  The good folks that put this site together could do an excellant job putting together an education program for the educators.

We've been shoved into back rooms and kept out of site for centuries because of fear and ignorance.  That is just not necessary any more.  When I was first diagnosed the advise given to my family was to keep it secret.  I did just that for years.  Now I am more open about my condition and it has freed me to having better friendships  and understanding on my difficult days.  Hopefully the day will come when I won't have to lie to employers to have a job, or get insurance, or some tolernce with my drug induced weight gain.

My daughter is 9 and has had complex partial seizures for five years. In January she was also diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  She has been in special ed for 3 years in a behavior disabilities class. The school recommended she have a psychiatric evaluation and it has been a horrible year.  Her last day at that school was last month after she was taken to the E.R. because she wasn't responding on the school bus and she was suspended the same day for bizarre behavior.  All year the school saw 2 seizures where as we see them daily at home. Finally this month we got the school to agree to out of district placement for my daughter.  This school is better able to deal with her medical conditions and I got a report each day of her seizures.  Instead of thinking of them as psychiatric this school realizes that they are seizures. I can now send my daughter to school without worrying about the school restraing her during a seizure because they don't realize that  she is having a seizure.

You know your daughter better than anyone so trust your instincts.
