Interpreting EEG results

Wed, 03/14/2007 - 17:12
Does an abnormal EEG automatically mean seizure disorder? Thats what I understood it to mean, but a lot of my family and friends are saying to get a second opinion. I think the doctor is spot on and feel relieved that what was wrong has a name and I wasn't going crazy. Am I correct to think that an abnormal EEG only means seizure disorder if your MRI is fine?

Not necessarily. Some people can have an abnormal EEG, but not have seizures or an epilepsy diagnosis. It depends on what makes it abnormal. EEG's are read by doctors who are trained in reading EEG's, not always necessarily your doctor. Definately ask you doctor which it is because it's important to know if you are likely to have seizures. Most people with epilepsy have a normal MRI. It just means that there is nothing structurally wrong. That's actually a good thing :)
