duration of video EEG?

Thu, 07/13/2006 - 12:13
Here I am again! I feel like I'm hogging the diagnostic dilemma forum. I need feedback on this, though. My neurologist has agreed to schedule me for a video EEG, to see if the episodes I am having are simple partial seizures, psychogenic seizures, or panic attacks. He said he goes 1-3 days tops for these, though, and I've read plenty, here and other places, about people going in for much more lengthy stays for a video EEG. Further, I only have a cluster of these episodes every 4-8 weeks. I just had a cluster last week, and the v EEG is scheduled soon. It doesn't seem likely to me that I will have any episodes while in the hospital, although they are not always completely predictable... I would just like to hear about other people's experiences. Do you have to have an actual episode while they are monitoring you for the doctors to determine whether or not there has been epileptic activity? Is my neurologist's insistence that we only monitor for 1-3 days the usual? I have already had an EEG and MRI done, and both had normal results; I am afraid that the results of this test will be "normal," too, and I won't be any closer to figuring out what's happening to me and how to treat it. Thanks everybody. --heidi

Heidi, You are not hogging! :) Anyway, back to your question. My eeg in the dr's office came back abnormal, but they wanted to see what was going with my brain throughout the days. So, they gradually took me off all my meds before I went into the hospital for my veeg. It worked, I only had to be there for 2 1/2 days and they recorded a BUNCH of seizures. Good luck to ya! To help pass the time, instead of having a nurse in there with me the whole time, I had family and friends come and sit in shifts. A couple of times, I had someone bring me a meal from the "outside". It was nice. Also, took books, games, puzzles, etc.

Never, EVER feel like a hog---This is the place for answers and help! I do understand though, My daughter was 1st diag 6 years ago, she has continued to have episodes, more meds, more test....BUT her reg EEG's have always been normal (4)...We are scheduled for a VEEG in Aug 06...She is 12, so things are probably diff, but they "Scheduled" her for 4-5 days. Our plan is to be sleep deprived, but after 24 hours they will "Detox" her....Push meds through the system-painful and a little dangerous, but will monitor her....I am excited and scared for her at the same time... We have been through alot of testing and less than understanding Ped.Nuero Docs...We actually have to go out of state to have this testing, it's not offered under the age of 18 in Oklahoma....just availability of docs/hospital, not law! Anyway, What I have learned throughout this up and down rollercoaster of test and doctors...It's your life, your condition, whatever is wrong....is NOT normal and you keep searching and testing, change Doc's of you need to! Until you find the TRUTH... It's taken me 6 years to finally push this issue and finally they are doing something more! I don't want anyone else to make that mistake....Doc's are just human, some more than others (haha), they can make mistakes, ALWAYS get a second, third, fourth opinion! Chelsey, has cluster episodes too! The would up her meds and she would be ok for 1-3 months, then they start up again..She is on 2 FULL doses of meds and they wanted to add a third and could not even tell me where the seizers originated from or even if it really was Epilepsy?? Clue! Sorry, to rant.... But, I know exactly how you feel.....You want answers, you don't want to be a bother, you feel guilty because you question their answers, response.....It's ok..It's your life and you can TAKE charge of it and still be a respectful. I have found that most doc's respond to your frankness, and boldness (Still polite) in a positive, effective manner. Anyway, let us know what happens and I will be praying for you! Please do the same for Chelsey (aug 7-11).
