Do i have epilipsy??

Wed, 12/07/2005 - 11:33
hey guys big question i know, seems like yo gotta go through a lot of scans and doctors before they can tell you for sure!!! anyway the topic of de ja vu came up in discussion with a group of my friends in college and i said that i hated getting deja vu because it made me feel physically ill!! i got some sideways looks, nobody figured what the hell i was talking about then this one guy i kinda know asked me to describe it further, so i did and said it might be epillepsy his cousin had it or stg so any way deja vu for me is (i know this may sound crazy) a very strong feeling that i know what someone is going to say and do, but if you were to ask me what it was before they did it i couldnt say, then at the very instant they do it i get this terrible feeling in my gut like my insides are collapsing!! it also feels a bit like the deja vu thing comes from characters in my head, i dont "see" them or "hear" them as in i dont know what they look like or sound like but they are definiatley making suggestions as to what is going to happen, their suggestions have a "tone" if you that makes any sense (how can you have a tone of voice if the voice isnt audiable, weather in you head or not??). anyway it usually passes quite quickly and if you asked me afterward what it was that i knew was going to happen i couldnt say either!! (i hope this is making some kind of sense). also occasionsally got the sensatioin of sounds having smells and visa versa????? anyway i've never taken any drugs (someone commented that it sounded like an lsd trip!!) and was wondering now if it could be down to epilesy i've noticed it's far more likley to happen if i am tired or havnt slept well. it hasnt happened in nearly 3 years, started when i was 15 and last one prob at 18 or 19?? any suggestions as to what it is, just stress, panic attack(whatever that is?) or as my friend tom suggestied possibly epilepsy????? i;m sorry this post even confuses me but its soo hard to explain thaks alot -jimbo!! p.s. no need to include disclaimers on any replies!! (lol), i'll take everything as your own personal experience or opinion

Hi James, It's certainly worth having a closer look at. I started out having strange deja vu sz's when I was 14 or so. Around 15-16, I was having them ALL of the time (probably because I was always drinking and sleeping very little). I remember commenting to my mom on how often I got this deja vu, and how intense it was. I was absolutely certain that I'd dreamt it years before, and that I was psychic. Mom just kind of laughed it off, so it was never looked into. I began having frequent complex partial sz's when I was 20, but they were misdiagnosed as panic attacks. I continued to have sz's for another 6 years, when I had a grand mal in my sleep. That was when I was diagnosed with epilepsy, and began treatment. I still continue to have my deja vu's several times a week...despite medications and lots of sleep. The important part is not letting it progress to a complex partial or grand mal. Since that night, at 26, I've had 2 other grand mals...both during VERY difficult times of life (one after childbirth, my other during withdrawals from an AED). So, while you might not think that it's a big deal (I know, I didn't), it is. Because it CAN progress. And you never know when that might happen...that's the scary part. After 22 years, I am just now realizing that (hey!) those were sz's! And it makes me both mad and sad that my mom didn't take me seriously back then. Don't make the same mistake I did. If your experiences are simply deja vu, no weird brain defects, wonderful!! But, you will know. I wish you the best of luck! Heather :)

Hi J-boy For a person who has never heard of de ja vu seizures, what grabs me about your post is you sure seem to know something about them. From what you've written, it sounds like in the past you have researched this type of seizure. Unless I'm not reading your post right, and need to go get my eyes tested, or see a therapist. Is that it, the answer to your post LOL... No matter. As a parent, I've been around long enough to know what does matter. That is getting to the cause of why James is having a bit of bother, that needs to be checked out. Also never assuming anything, it's always safer to go talk to an expert is worth keeping in mind. That could include asking if a sleep deprived EEG should be one of the tests when you do. As a parent, I've also learned to take what experts, or wanabee experts say with a pinch of salt LOL. I like the salt in my soup and know to hang in there until you know when you know for sure.   There are some links here that might help you out. Save them someplace, so you can grab hold of them. You never know-they might come in handy if you need to refresh your memory before you go see your doctor. Good luck when you do. Be sure to come back and tell us some more about yourself.
