Any info on Ketogenic Diet

Wed, 02/09/2005 - 18:07
My three year old son has daily myoclonic seizures, as well as some generalized seizures. He is maxed out on Lamictal. He takes B6, and two weeks ago Zonegran was added to his medications. His seizures have gotten a little bit better, but he has lost words, and has regressed. Prior to this, we tried Topomax, and he had a horrible reaction. We want to try the Ketogenic Diet. I just e-mailed Johns Hopkins about it. Have any of you tried it? Any success? Thank you!

Exploring all options to help seizures is great. Some people do better when a specific diet is added to medical therapy, and smaller numbers may be able to use it successfully without meds. Keep in mind that how adults may respond may be different than how kids respond to dietary therapy.

Starting a diet such as ketogenic diet or the Atkins, needs to be done under medical supervision, with help of nurses and nutritionists skilled in the therapy. Many epilepsy centers offer these services - check with epileptologists in your area. Demos Publishers also offers book on ketogenic diet that I think is available via the bookstore on this site. shop.epilepsy.com

Hope this helps,

PAOLO ketogenic diet is very hard, and some time dangerous in children. We had a good clinical outcome by serotoninergic diet (Food supplement Serplus, Gifarma srl info@giofarma.it). Recent papers are in agreement that an increase of brain serotonin can help the control of the seizures. Serplus is a special formulation of alpha lactalbumine, a whey protein, also in human milk at 2 g/l concentration. There are not side effects. The allergic to milk are allergic to beta-lactalbumin, no present in serplus, and the intollerants are intollerant to lactose sugar, not present in serplus. If you wish try send email to info@giofarma.it
