Panic attack versus seizure

Sat, 02/28/2009 - 06:08

What is the difference between a panic attack and a seizure? The seizure I had this evening started with a sheer panic attack and progressed into a complex partial seizure. I felt sheer terror at first working up my spine and then it generalized into a true seizure, where I lost consciousness.

Has anybody else had this happen to them? Any information or response would be grateful.

Thank you for replying! I also was heavily abused as a kid by my father, not for the same reasons, but because he was simply mentally ill. For example, he chased me and my brothers out of the house with a shot gun and once I had to step in the way of my father holding a loaded pistol to my Mom (bless her soul!). Those were only a few examples of how mean-spirited and downright evil he was. I am so sorry to hear about your experience, for being gay and lesbian has been an enormous problem and continues to be one (i.e. Sarah Palin, for example).

The doctors have diagnosed that there was no particular reason for my condition, I was born with a problem in the left side of my brain and it doesn't get enough blood.

However, in scarier situations, I have atonic seizures (blackouts) and secondary generalized seizures as well. I am wondering if all of that has contributed to my current mess.

Good luck and hang in there! I am fully supportive of you and want to hear more.

This is an interesting

This is an interesting discussion. My husband Roy was originally diagnosed with partial seizures 10 years ago and cost him his career. Occasionally he would smell something and a feel nauseous. Symptoms of a seizure. He remembers the Neurologist did not pick up anything specific in EEG but conclude that it could be. Roy managed to stay employed because as he said how could an organisation fire him for being unwell when he used to run to work and back everyday. However recently, we moved back into the house we originally bought where the seizures started (he only experienced the seizures when he came to New Zealand), he was afraid to move back in because due to it size, there was a lot of all the work needed to maintain the property and now we have three children and two rental properties. He has a lot on his mind and a seizures have gotten worst. On occasions he has woken up in the middle of the night with cold sweats, no reason why, he has had numerous ECG because he always thinks he has had a heartache. Every time he passes all the tests. His last seizure was after he had an argument on the phone with someone he was trying to by a car from. That night he had a seizure, body shacking, afraid to go to sleep, not able to sleep, heart racing, blood pumping, depression, crying and woke up thing he had had a heart attach. This lasts for a couple of days, then after about 6 days he is all fine. So he decided to see his doctor, the normal one was not around, so he went to another. As he told her the symptoms she brought up the phrase Anxiety/Panic Attacks. All the symptoms he experiences are listed in under physical conditions. So after ten years and lost career he has discovered that after all this time he may have actually been suffering from panic attacks. Just goes to show, you should always look for a second opinion.

My 11 year old daughter is going through that now. It is scary. I was told today she might be having seizures.
