On Saturday, October 5, 2103, members of the local community gathered at Susan Nelson Art Gallery and Turley Emett Studio on the Balboa Peninsula for an evening of art and charity at the 2nd annual event to benefit Epilepsy Therapy Project. Over 150 donors and artists had the opportunity to peruse the poignant art pieces spanning two adjacent galleries while enjoying drinks and appetizers on a lovely evening. 120 artists from around the world living with epilepsy submitted work to be displayed, purchased and used in the innovative Take it From Here…The Hidden Truths Coloring Book. The Community Art Show on Sunday, October 6th was open for the afternoon free of charge. The art will continue to hang in the galleries until November 1, 2013. The coloring book, both edifying and inspired, is available for purchase from Heidi Meireles at 714-987-9975 or email@example.com.

Guests mingled in the galleries, sharing their stories related to epilepsy with a sensation of camaraderie and strength. Many proudly photographed the art on display, and others purchased works of art to support both the artist and the cause. Everyone chatted with new friends with a shared sense of purpose. The crowd gathered inside the Susan Nelson gallery at the midpoint of the night to enjoy a few words from the inspirational speakers. Dr. Julie Thompson-Dobkin spoke first, eloquently welcoming us, sharing her enthusiasm and passion for the Epilepsy Therapy Project and the expansion of Hidden Truths Project, utilizing art as educational tool to enhance societal awareness and demystify this condition for the many individuals living with epilepsy. She was excited about the growth of this event, in just its second year, and looks forward to its future expansion. Warren Lammert, former chairman and co-founder of Epilepsy Therapy Project & chair of the Board of Directors of the merged ETP/EF, Phil Gattone, president and CEO of Epilepsy Foundation & the evening’s honoree, Dr. Steven Schachter, Chief Academic Officer and Program Leader of NeuroTechnology at the Center for the Integration of Medicine/Epilepsy Foundation & serves on their Board of Directors, all spoke ardently about the advances in epilepsy therapy being made thanks to the hard work of many, enlightening us all about the crucial need for accelerated research and development.
Dr. Julie Thompson-Dobkin, Susan Nelson, Jill Wexler, Heidi Meireles and Priscilla Burton did an incredible job organizing and executing a wonderful night celebrating artists living with epilepsy and educating the public about the Epilepsy Therapy Project’s mission to develop new therapies for and understanding of the more than two million people affected with the condition.

The Hidden Truths, The Mind Unraveled is presented by Hidden Truths Project in collaboration with the Epilepsy Foundation, as an annual fundraiser. The two-day celebration of the arts is designed to showcase the artwork of artists with epilepsy. The inaugural event included reproductions of artwork from Dr. Steven Schachter's portfolio of artists living with epilepsy. The event was a huge success, allowing donations of over $10,000 to Epilepsy Foundation's work in translational research. It was instrumental in creating an awareness of the incidence and prevalence of this hidden disability, affecting so many individuals in our society. Barriers were broken down, preconceived biases diminished, gaining a wider acceptance and support of this condition. The art show maintains the spirit of celebration in support of the amazing group of artists living with epilepsy. Art providing the educational tool, enhancing societal awareness of this condition. Art speaks a universal language to allow a dialog between the artist and the observer revealing the hidden truths about epilepsy.
Take it from here... is a 50 page coloring book which includes the works of 22 artists with epilepsy.. It was designed as an educational tool for the general public and an inspirational force for those living with epilepsy, who are not artists. The creator of Take it from here... Dr. Julie Thompson-Dobkin, says, "The journey from front to back of the coloring book will tell the stories of lives lived with epilepsy. In completing the book, the many hidden truths of epilepsy will be revealed."
Those who purchase Take it From Here... have the opportunity to connect with the artist via social media to share their perception and experience in completing the image and post the completed pictures on Hidden Truths Facebook page. Volume I is geared towards teens and adults, although the stories told through the art can appeal to all.
Hidden Truths Project and the Hidden Truths, the Mind Unraveled team (Chair, Dr. Julie Thompson-Dobkin, Co-Chairs Susan Nelson and Jil Wexler and our ETP/EF colleagues Heidi Meireles and Priscilla Burton) would like to extend a special thank you to all of the artists submitting work for review.
