Seizures while sleeping

Can any parents offer any advice on how to make peace with my recently-diagnosed six-yr-old son, sleeping in his own bed at night? The neurologist hasn't named his type of epilepsy, but he has said that any seizures will occur during falling asleep and/or waking up. So far, they have only occurred during falling asleep. The only way we knew he was having seizures was because he happened to be sleeping in our bed. The very first time it was coincidental. Now, I am very scared to let him sleep in his own bed for fear that I won't know it's happening, and I won't be there to help him. The four times they've occurred, I've either woken up to his body convulsing or I was awake and saw the seizure begin. I am scared. As you can imagine, I don't sleep well even with him next to me. He wants to sleep in his room. How would you handle it? Thank you!

Getting better sleep is good

Getting better sleep is good for parents' coping and reducing seizures so look at ways to improve sleep routines. If he seizes without much noise, there are monitors to catch movements or ways to catch things (e.g. pulse ox if O2 levels drop during seizures). I would push for more specifics on diagnosis... partial vs. generalized would only be a start.  You will be able to help him better when you know more, nocturnal seizures covers wide range of possibilities.

Our son was recently

Our son was recently diagnosed with seizures and we have a video monitor in his room. (He's 3) It's very comforting to put him down to bed and go watch to make sure he doesn't have any, particularly when he's having one of those days. We've tried to go in there when he's having them, they're usually very short but multiple, and he tells us to go away so he can sleep. We're definitely more affected by his seizures than he is, so take some comfort from that.

If his seizures are before

If his seizures are before sleeping or after waking up he may have nocturnal epilepsy which can be treated well. Let him sleep in his bed and room. But do get a vidoe moniter which can be used to view him. That way he has his freedon and can play or do things by himself. It also lets you relax some. The moniter can be used for some time without him objecting. There are other moniters that can be used later if needed which can be hidden but then I won't go there. I am blessed to have had 1 seizure at night but it was a focal seizure since it affected my hand. If he is using medications do watch his dosages and if he grows check with his neuro if the number of seizures increase.  I would also suggest you get teh My Epilepsy diary and watch the video it tells you how to use it and wahat it can do I hope this helps and he gets seizure free Joe
