Safety - especially in the bathtub

Tue, 07/03/2007 - 16:33
My daughter is 2, so she is still at the age where I bathe her, and stay right by her side while she plays in the tub. She has been afraid of the tub for a while, and its something we've been working on. But last week we had a setback and serious ssfety scare. My daughter started having one of her seizures (infantile spasms) while in the tub. She had a head drop, typical of IS, and went face first into the water. Because of the seizure she was unable to immediately lift her face out of the water. I had to phsycially pick her head out of the water (she was sputtering and cryinig at that point). I talked to her OT who recommended a bath chair, that for her safety she probably needs one. I know many people with epilepsy take showers only, but that isn't quite feasible with a toddler. I was wondering if anyone had gotten a specialty bath chair so that if they have a seizure while in the tub they don't drown? Thanks!

My daughter was two when she started having seizures. I use to worry about her taking a bath all the time. She is six now and its still in the back of my mind every night when she gets in the bath. I dont make her take shower every night, but when she is having seizure problems its diffently shower time. Baths are part of the fun of being a kid. I think the chair is a great idea. I will probably make her feel safer when she see's she's not going to fall under the water, and it will help to put you to be able to relax alittle. We have been very luckly that my daughter has never had a seizure in the bath. She has step out of the tub and had one and that was scarey enough.(close call) Now my daughter is six. Swimming is a big concern. When she's not with family I make her wear a life jacket. Just alittle tip as your daughter is getting older.
