Recognizing a seizure

Wed, 10/29/2014 - 20:47

Hello! I'm new to this, so I guess I'll jump right in.

My son,8, had a tonic clonic seizure in July. After much testing, he was diagnosed as having benign rolandic epilepsy. As I understand it, it's most likely to affect him at night and he should grow out of it by puberty. This is a diagnosis that I'm totally comfortable with. Because he's never had a seizure before, he's not on medication. He hasn't had another seizure since July.

Over the past few days, he has complained of sudden confusion, being hot, feeling nauseous, and feeling as though his "brain is shutting down". He said it goes away quickly.

Im sorry if this is long, but I don't know what to think of this. Benign rolandic isn't supposed to happen during the day? Is this a seizure? Could it be anxiety attacks? He had another "episode" (I guess I'll call it that) last night right before bed. He told me he couldn't stop thinking about having a seizure and it gave him the same feelings. I just don't know how nervous I should be. He's on a swim team and my recurring nightmare over the past few months is him having a seizure in the water.

Again, I'm sorry if this is long.

It could be seizure aqctivity

It could be seizure aqctivity. Before being diagnosed with epilepsy there were times when I got hot. Other times I was nauseaus.. As for lightheadedness that too is one of those things that is in almost all types of seizures. I saw your post about him and  swimming. Let him swim but as the coach did he is protecting your son. My Mother would not let me on the team because I was having convulsive seizures at anytime during the day. However I did go thru it in PE. The coach had me showing the others how to do some of the dives and I even helped teach some people how to swim. Coach had a varsity swim team person on both sides of me when I was doing laps. Shannon relax some don't go out and beat yourself up. My mother didn't know I had been having seizures for over 1-2 years. She thought just like many of my teachers did I was day dreaming. Those day dreams were petite mal seizures. She wasn't the onnly one to not think of a seizure when I had wierd feeling in my right hand. Or a twitch in the hand. Those were focal motor seizures. So relax a little understand your son can do anything the other kids can do. Use some common sense and teach him to do the same thing and he will go far. Shannon I admire Mothers who want the best for their kids. I have been blessed to have a mother like you. I would not be here today if it weren't for a mothers prayer. I sent mine thru the roof but I wouldn't trade her for anything. I hope this helps and he gets seizure free Joe
