New to epilepsy - Looking for pediatric neurologist in Arkansas

Wed, 02/18/2015 - 11:45

Hello, my son has been having unusual episodes in the morning for the last several months.  He had an abnormal EEG, clear MRI.  Put on Keppra 1000mg per day, which did not help.  Doctor increased to 1500mg, but episodes got worse and more frequent.  Since the Keppra was not working, and the side effects were harder to deal with than the episodes, I called to see if we could wean him off and get him in for another appt.   I spoke to doctor's nurse, who relayed conversation to doctor.  She calls me back to say that he thinks it might be Tourette's, so he wants to drop him back down to 1000mg of Keppra, but do not continue to wean off.  He also wants to put him on Tenex for Tourette's/tics.  I was not crazy about this doctor to begin with due to him not addressing my concerns during our first visit.  But now I really want to switch to another doctor. I just don't feel like they know at all what these episodes are, and they are not trying to figure it out.  I don't want to keep switching medicines until something works.

Anyway, we live in Arkansas.  The doctor he has seen so far is at Arkansas Children's Hospital.  If anyone here knows of a good pediatric neurologist at ACH, or anywhere else in Arkansas, I would greatly appreciate any recommendations!  We are also willing to travel to Memphis or Tulsa since they are less than a 3 hour drive from us.

Thanks in advance!

I understand your concern. I also did not see anything in your post as to WHEN he had his seizure, I also did no see how long he was on keppra befire th decissions was made to wean him off.Medications to control epilepsy and not like asperin. There are no one time medications. A medication that works for one person may not work for the next. The dosages levels are generally set by the neurologist who aleready has a patient using the medication. A little medication may work for one preson byt the next person may need the maximum dosage. Side effects do happen because it takes time for the body to get used to the medication which can take 3-6 weeksAs for finding a doctor near you you can bring them up on this site they can be found in th get help section. But jst go to the address epihelp has in his post
