Mom of High School girl (17) with epilepsy, falling behind peers, etc.

Sun, 01/04/2015 - 10:56

In 2011 at the age of 13 my daughter had 2 gran mal seizures within 8 months and was diagnosed with epilepsy. Since then, she has suffered memory loss-both short and long term and cogntive impairment. In May of 2014 we tapered off Keppra to see if she had "grown out" of seizues per her nueurologists watch & advice, only to have a more serious gran mal, creating more memory loss and cognitive issues. She now has the 504 plan for school and is repeating for the third time a few 9th grade core courses that MUST pass before moving to the 10th grade...unfortunately her math subtraction skills are gone! :-( She is totally behind her peers, wants to drop out, get her GED, and now at 17 I don't know how to help or cope, much less encourage this desire. She's nowhere near ready for work force and refuses the votech route as well. :-( Before epilepsy she was accellerated student, advanced placement, now struggles. Any insight or shared experience is greatly appreciated. We live in Virginia and her public school system has been wonderful throughout the 3 years...it's just the law on passing these classes....very frustrating!!
