Keppra rage in 18 month old son

Wed, 12/03/2014 - 17:58

Hi all,

My son was diagnosed with Epilepsy in August at the age of 15 months.  Long story short, he contracted a very nasty virus that brought out his underlying Epilepsy.  At first, the doctors thought he had complex febrile seizures (presented by GTC and Myoclonic seizures) and we were in the hospital with him for 2 days.  The day after we got home, he started having Atonic seizures (no fever) and we were in the hospital with him for 2 more weeks. He had a very abnormal EEG and a severe allergic reaction to Phenobartital.  He was prescribed Keppra and Onfi back in August and has not had a seizure since August 25th, which has been an amazing blessing.  However, he has recently become very aggitated and often has meltdowns- particularly in stores.  He has always been very spirited but his recent behavior seems a little off to us.  His doctor had mentioned the Keppra may cause him to get angry along with other various side-effects.  I am looking for anyone else who has experienced this same type of behavior that was Keppra related and not just your typical toddler temper-tantrums.  That's what we just can't seem to pin-point... is this just normal behavior of an 18 month old, or is it something more.  Most of the time at home he is perfectly ok but when we go out he seems to act differently- specific stores such as Target and Michaels seem to be more of an issue than others and he is perfectly behaved (most of the time) in restaurants.  Any info on outbursts or "Keppra Rage" in toddlers would be great.  He does not hit, but it almost seems like he is in pain all of the sudden- maybe like a headache.  I'm just not sure what it is but he stops as soon as we are outside the store.  I apologize if this seems like rambling, but I just wasn't sure how else to word all that has been going on with him.  Thank you so much for your kind input :)

My daughter had two seizures

My daughter had two seizures in one day, one in the Emergency Room.  Our neuro started her on Keppra and it made her psycho!  Angry, yelling.  We took her off.  But then she has been unable to tolerate any seizure meds besides gabapentin up to this point.  We tried lamictal - horrible rash sent us to ER, topomax, she lost 5 pounds a week, Depakote she had projectile vomiting.  Now trying Vimpat, so far no side effects. I hate this but the seizures are worse.  All have been during sleep except the last one, during which she was awake and resulting in chronic daily migraine and vomiting which has lasted almost a year now!

My son is bad in stores.  I

My son is bad in stores.  I suspect it may have a lot to do with the bright lighting and sensory overload, but also keppra seems to aggravate them, or eliminate their ability to ration their response situations.     Even the most simple things can trigger my son.   I call it frenzies, or neurological activity, because its not a seizure but he is not himself.  He will suddenly be frantically trying to bite scratch and move away from something that isnt there.   Like he has a phobia and that phobia is crawling up his leg but nothing is there.   My son has 100, to up to 250 seizures a day. When he was a baby, keppra was a godsend, but. We are constantly titrating meds, because they only work for max of 3-5 weeks, begore the seizures come back, so we do little increases of one med and little decreases of the disco med,  and that is how se manage his seizures.   So because it worked so well as a baby, we brought it back again this year.     I can tell you, from the first day we reintroduced keppra, these frenzies began.   The first night, he would do this out of a sound sleep, he would pull himelf up the side of his crib in a panic and start frantically doing things, and then fall back asleep just as quickly.   He started having meltdowns, and biting people.   Screaming and just seeming generally unimpressed and unsatisfied. I can tell you for certain, this (with my son)  is related to keppra.
