Infant with Complex-Partial Seizure

Fri, 05/11/2007 - 11:10
My 11 month old has recently been dx with complex/partial epilepsy. I am very concerned that there is so little information about medicine for this age group. Does anybody know of any good resources/? We saw MAJOR behavior changes on Trileptil and are now adding Kepra.

Hello, My 9yo daughter had major behavior issues on trileptal and he doctor added keppra yesterday. I'm at a loss because trileptal is supposed to be one of the ones that causes the least problems with behavior. How has he been with the Keppra? my daughter had 3 doses of 1ml each & her father is on the way to pick her up from school. She is crying, screaming, angry, saying she hates herself. Called the neuro and he said it could be the initial reaction & keep an eye on her. If she gets worse or doesnt improve over the weekend we will try topomax next.. Good luck to you with your son! shar

Hi Shar. Thanks for

Hi Shar. Thanks for responding. Initially we had had a positive response with the Trileptil. By week 2 his seizures had gradually diminished and the gross motor skills had dramatically improved. But then my very happy, laid back, cooperative baby became a monster! He stopped sleeping, didn't want to eat much, and was constantly unhappy, crying, irritable, screaming and even banging his head. A few times he actually put his head in his hands and looked just hopeless.. he's only 11-months so he doesn't have any words to tell me what's going on. We just ADDED Kepra 2 days ago at 1 ml/night. The dr. said we need to do a week of that before starting to decrease the Trileptil. I guess its too soon to see any seizure improvment but he is sleeping again (slept the first night he had the Kepra) and the majority of the irritability and screaming is gone...I have not gotten a good explanation yet of why we'd some improvement initially on the Trileptil. But in 2 days I've gotten back my happy little guy. I hope that you will also have some positive response. I'd love to hear from you in the future since it sounds like we're dealing with the same meds...Christina

Hi Christina, My daughter was great on trileptal from april until nov. 2006. then she started having partials. she had 2 grand mals and that was why she was put on the trileptal to begin with. In nov. her behavior and schoolwork got so bad. They wanted to move her to another school in a self contained class of 6 kids. Her neuro said no way she is too smart for that but trying to get the right med has been a nightmare. Twice he increased the trileptal & that didnt stop the partials and she became more aggressive and nasty. Then he tried lamictal and she got the rash. Now yesterday the keppra and she had to leave school. they said she went thru about 4 different emotions in less than a minute. The neuro said it may just be the initial response to it and will go away so for now keep her on it. So tough seeing her go thru this and i'm sure you feel the same way. I just hope she calms down and it works for her. Glad to hear your son is doing better and keep in touch. Shar
